I’ll never forget the day in the OR when I realized something had to change. I’d been a nurse for over a decade, searching for the role that would fulfill my desire to help people truly heal. A vascular patient returned for another, more invasive procedure on that particular day. His condition, worsened by lifestyle choices like smoking and uncontrolled diabetes, now required surgery that would likely lead to amputation.

As I stood assisting a skilled surgeon, the question burned in my mind: How are we failing people so much that they continue down these paths? I realized we need a new approach—one that cares for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Modern healthcare is vital, but wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t need it as much? This epiphany led me to coaching, where I now guide clients in holistic healing. These are the lessons I’ve carried with me on this journey.

1. Healing Starts With Listening

In nursing, I discovered that deep, empathetic listening is often more healing than any medical intervention. Listening says, I see you, I hear you, and I’m here with you. For many, it’s the first step toward healing.

I recall a patient with chronic pain who felt dismissed and misunderstood by countless specialists. When I simply invited him to share his story, he became emotional, saying, “I feel lighter just having been able to say it out loud.” That moment reinforced a powerful truth: being truly heard is transformative.

Now, as a coach, I create spaces where clients feel safe to express their struggles and joys. Whether it’s a patient in pain or a client navigating burnout, listening is the foundation for healing.

2. The Body Holds the Story

The body often tells the stories we can’t—or won’t—put into words. Emotional pain, when unaddressed, manifests as chronic tension or unexplained symptoms. In my nursing practice, I saw countless patients with persistent issues that medical tests couldn’t explain. Often, these were tied to unresolved emotional burdens like grief or trauma.

One coaching client with debilitating leg pain discovered her discomfort was tied to years of self-sacrifice and suppressing her needs. Through somatic tools like breathwork and gentle movement, she began releasing those emotions, and her pain eased. The body isn’t betraying us when it hurts; it’s communicating. When we listen, we unlock a profound path to healing.

3. The Power of Small Moments

Healing isn’t always dramatic. It often unfolds in quiet, meaningful moments of care and connection. I think of a stroke patient who struggled to communicate his fears before surgery. By slowing down, listening, and offering reassurance, I saw his tension melt away. That small act of compassion allowed him to face his procedure with newfound calm.

Healing isn’t always about curing—it’s about making people feel seen and valued in the process. The seemingly insignificant moments can carry immense power.

4. Holistic Healing Requires Collaboration

True healing addresses every layer of our being: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Ignoring one can hinder the others.

Physical healing is often the most visible, but unprocessed emotional wounds can prolong recovery. Mindset shapes our ability to heal, while spiritual health—our sense of purpose and connection—anchors us through life’s challenges.

Healing also requires a team. I’ve seen caregivers burn out trying to do it all, only to find strength when they accept help. It’s a shared journey, where progress, not perfection, is the goal. Together, we create space for transformation.

5. Growth Comes Through Discomfort

Healing requires courage to face uncomfortable truths. Whether it’s the physical pain of recovery or the emotional challenge of addressing trauma, discomfort is often a sign of progress.

One client came to me seeking relief from burnout, only to uncover deeper patterns of grief and people-pleasing. Though painful, confronting these truths allowed her to release them, reclaiming her energy and joy.

Avoiding discomfort only prolongs suffering. Growth lies on the other side of the hard conversations and feelings we fear. Healing asks us to trust the process and lean into the messy, human experience of transformation.

6. Connection Is the Best Medicine

Loneliness is a barrier to healing. I’ve seen patients with excellent medical care struggle because they felt isolated, while those with strong connections often heal faster.

One man, withdrawn after surgery, blossomed when I took time to talk about his life. That simple connection rekindled his engagement in recovery. Healing happens when we feel supported, seen, and valued.

As a coach, I help clients build meaningful connections with loved ones, communities, and themselves. Healing isn’t a solo journey—it thrives in connection.

7. Healing Is About Empowerment

True healing begins when people feel empowered to take charge of their well-being. It’s about discovering their strength and agency, not following someone else’s script.

I worked with a patient overwhelmed by a chronic illness. Together, we broke her care into manageable steps, helping her regain confidence in her ability to make choices. She stopped seeing herself as a passive recipient and became an active participant in her healing.

I guide clients through coaching to reconnect with their intuition and take ownership of their journeys. Empowerment transforms healing into a process of self-discovery and growth.

The Path to Wholeness

Healing isn’t just about treating symptoms, it’s about nurturing every layer of who we are. Whether in a hospital room or a coaching session, I’ve learned that healing begins with connection, courage, and compassion. It’s not a destination but a journey of becoming whole again.

TAKE ACTION: If you’re on a healing path, know this: you have the power within you to heal. Trust your body, embrace discomfort, seek connection, and take ownership of your journey. Transformation is possible when we honor the beautiful complexity of being human. If you are feeling the need for whole-person healing, reach out to me here.
