What’s the “Divine Timeline”?

The other day I was chatting with one of my students, someone who struggles with her out of control “control issue.” Even though she recognizes when she’s doing it, she can’t seem to control her need to control others.

Tried to be appropriate by controlling my out-of-control smile, but it leaked out.

I reminded her that the need to control life is one of those universal issues. Although it looks different for each of us, and shows up in subtle or blatant ways, we are all inflicted with that ‘dis-ease’ to some degree.

Even if we won’t admit it. Especially if we won’t admit it. 

She went on to share an exciting breakthrough she had about her ongoing need to control her boyfriend. She explained that she woke up one morning and unexpectedly decided to “surrender,” to just allow him to be who he is.

This was huge and I celebrated her!

After our call, I started thinking about the vast difference between letting go, giving up and surrendering.

Letting go is often a futile attempt to prove how wise we are by announcing our intent to let-go-and-let-God. Did stating that cliché really work? Doubtful.  

Giving up is from feeling utterly hopeless and doomed to a future of misery. It’s usually accompanied by loud, victim-y sighing.

Surrendering is neither of those.

What Is Surrendering?

Surrendering happens from ceasing resistance, but from an authentic place. Not by faking it or thinking you ‘should.’ Rather, it’s reaching the point where you absolutely know you are okay with or without this and trusting that if it never happens you will eventually understand why no matter how long it takes.

It’s being on the top of a mountain looking down at yourself hiking a challenging, twisty path. On one sharp turn, you’re suddenly blocked by a huge boulder that prevents you from taking that next curve. Your top of the mountain vantage point allows you to see that the boulder saved you from meeting a very hungry lion head-on.

Problem is, we rarely have that top of the mountain vantage point.  So we struggle, try to push the boulder off the path, attempt to climb over it, wave for a helicopter to recuse us, all to no avail. Ah, if only we could shift our view, it would all make sense. 

Surrendering is trusting that the boulder is there for a reason. That eventually you will know how Perfect surrendering was in ways you have no clue about yet. Even if it doesn’t make sense in the moment, you trust what will unfold.

Surrendering is not easy until it is. It means stepping out of your comfort zone, the place that feels secure, and trusting the Bigger Picture at play. It takes a while (sometimes lifetimes) to see and understand that Bigger Picture, but it always shows up. Compare it to seeing the first episode of a series of movies and not understanding the plot until episode four. Or five. Or ten.

Surrender is difficult when you are stuck in your ego that’s dictating lots of “shoulds.” But the more you trust what your Higher Consciousness is intending, the lessons and awakening, the more magic and miracles manifest. And life flows easier.

That Pesky Divine Timeline

Which leads me to talk about what I call the “Divine Timeline.”

Admittedly, most of my students grimace (some hiss some strong “f-words”) every time I talk about it. I do get it.

We try to do something, accomplish something, change something, be something, and no matter how hard we struggle, do all the right things, diligently do the inner work, appeal to the Universe, nothing happens.

Been there, done that.

However, looking backwards, it all makes sense.

Like that guy I desperately wanted to marry only to discover it would have been disastrous. Or that move out of state I desperately wanted to make that would have stopped me from teaching my Perfect Life Awakening program. I could go on and on.

Divine Timeline has your back. It prevents you from doing certain things or making certain changes because it has the Bigger Picture vantage of your life. It sees what you are here to do. It understands what you are here to clean up. It makes sure you wait for the “right” people to arrive in your life before you do something.

It knows why certain things Should. Just. Not. Happen.

You chose your current lifetime knowing all that, knowing what you are here to accomplish, when and how. You brought certain issues to address, karma to address, people in your cast of characters.

It’s all chosen for your evolutionary process, from fear to love.

The Divine Timeline is what’s constantly trying to align everything in your life so that things that are supposed to happen, can. It leads you into a relationship you never would have chosen who ends up being your perfect partner. It pushes you into a career you never would have thought you could do, only to discover your greatest denied skill. It eliminates certain people who you are done learning from so you can move on to others with more lessons or to clean up things with.

My own life has been an ongoing research project learning to trust (and honor) the Divine Timeline. I’ve undergone huge personal transitions that never made logical sense but led me toward my Highest Purpose and my soul’s truth.

Everything that happened was completely different from what my human perspective thought was best.  But it all makes perfect sense now.

The road to those outcomes is not without bumps. Trusting in Divine Timing is challenging because uncertainty is never comfortable. As a human, those hardships, losses, and roadblocks on the path to something Bigger create stress, conflict and dread. 

But after enough experiences, it gets easier to lean into trust, release your judgment about what you’re experiencing, and hold on tightly to what the Universe has in store for you.

The external circumstances become meaningless and don’t impact what you are doing. in fact, they can make you feel more certain that the path you are on is the Right one.

Most importantly, you trust whatever the outcome is. You see it as a mirror to help you go deeper to discover more about yourself, your limiting beliefs, your fears, lack of deservingness and hidden denial. 

Ways to Stay Aligned

1. Re-align.
   If you are in the middle of a struggle, know allow yourself to reconnect with your Higher Consciousness. Recognize that those feelings of doubt and confusion are often a sign that you have disconnected in some way. Perhaps do a meditation, prayer or your own spiritually-based practice with the intent to reconnect.
   
2. Did you ignore an inner, intuitive knowing at some point?
   Maybe you chalked off signs and synchronicities as “coincidences” or “accidents.” Did validations slip by without grabbing them? Look back and see what you missed.
3. Tell the truth: What’s your true intention?
   What are you really trying to attain? Are you trying to impress your friends? To get attention or approval? Is it to make a statement to someone in your life? To feed your ego in some way? To feel safe and secure? To prove you are smart, talented, capable and lovable? To get revenge of some kind? Recognizing those ego-based motives and shifting to a pure, loving intention can change everything.
4. Choose selflessness.
   When what you desire is from a selfless place, purely assisting others in some way, the Universe offers support. When you strive for peace, love and joy, the details often fall into place at the exact Perfect Time.
5. Trust your soul.
   Have the intention to allow your soul to lead the way, letting go of control and easing into surrender. Eventually, your demanding, fearful ego will relent.   

And remember: When it looks like nothing’s going to change is often when something is just about ready to happen. Like a big life transformation.
