How Slowing Down Can Transform Your Healing Journey

In today’s fast-paced world, even our personal healing journeys can become a race. We may unconsciously strive to heal faster, achieve greater spiritual insights, or move past emotional wounds with the same urgency we apply to our careers or fitness goals. But could this competitive approach to healing actually hinder our progress? And might it be a form of spiritual bypassing? Let’s explore how adopting a slower, more intentional approach can lead to deeper, more transformative healing.

What Is Spiritual Bypassing?

Coined by psychologist John Welwood, spiritual bypassing refers to the use of spiritual practices or beliefs to avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, or fundamental aspects of our humanity. In the context of healing, it might look like rushing through inner work to avoid discomfort or using “positive vibes only” mantras to sidestep grief or anger.

For example, imagine someone experiencing a breakup who immediately dives into gratitude practices, affirmations, or energy-clearing rituals without first allowing themselves to feel the pain of loss. While these practices can be valuable tools, skipping the necessary emotional processing can leave deeper wounds unhealed.

The Cost of Competitive Healing

When we approach healing as a race to the finish line, we risk perpetuating the very stress and disconnection we seek to resolve. It can also reinforce the pattern of needing to heal everything in order to be perfect or move forward in life. This “healing hamster wheel” can make the process feel harder, longer, and more frustrating. Energetically, forcing healing can create resistance, preventing the natural flow of release and integration.

A great example of this is found in meditation. Meditators often evaluate their sessions as “good” or “bad,” depending on how peaceful or challenging the experience felt. But this judgment misses a crucial point: all experiences are valuable. A difficult meditation might signal the release of deep-seated emotional or subconscious patterns, paving the way for profound transformation. Conversely, an easy meditation might signal a process of free flow, where energy moves effortlessly and can be enjoyed for its simplicity. Neither experience is a punishment or reward for being a “good” or “bad” meditator. Both are integral parts of the journey and reflect the natural rhythms of inner work.

Hitting the Healing Wall: When the Past Keeps You Stuck

For spiritual overachievers, there is often a belief that every emotional wound must be resolved or every loose end tied up before moving forward in life. This mindset can lead to endless rumination—constantly analyzing feelings and rehashing events to the point where progress feels impossible. It’s as if one is hitting a wall, spinning in circles without making any headway.

However, in reality, there is a stage of healing that is inherently tied to moving forward. While it’s crucial to process and integrate past wounds, at some point, forward momentum becomes essential for growth. The next phase in the healing journey involves stepping into a space where one can embrace what comes next. Healing doesn’t stop with revisiting past wounds; it continues by living in a new reality, a process that may bring more healing related to the shift. This is a normal and necessary part of the journey. Ultimately, healing isn’t just about revisiting old wounds—it’s about transforming them into wisdom and creating a renewed sense of purpose in life.

The Value of Slowing Down

True healing requires time, space, and presence. From an energetic perspective, slowing down allows us to:

  • Experience and Digest
Emotions are energy in motion. When we suppress or rush them, they can become stuck, leading to recurring patterns. By fully experiencing and digesting these energies, we complete their cycle and release them.
  • Practice Alchemy
In the healing process, we break down energies that no longer serve us and return them to source. This alchemical process requires rest and receptivity, not force.
  • Create Space
Slowing down invites ease, grace, and acceptance. When we release the need to control the outcome, we open ourselves to unexpected insights and deeper healing.

A great example of this can be seen in the experience of someone I once worked with. They discovered energy healing during a time of deep grief, and the initial healing experience was profoundly transformative. Inspired, they signed up for class after class, workshop after workshop, determined to be the best at healing they could be. But as time passed, they began to feel overwhelmed rather than empowered. The stress of trying to “catch up” with so much knowledge actually took them further away from their original intention: to process the loss of a loved one. They realized that in the rush to heal, they were only prolonging the process.

Everything shifted when they finally gave themselves permission to pause and reflect. Slowing down allowed them to release the pressure of needing to heal perfectly. It also allowed them to embrace the messiness and non-linear nature of grief—acknowledging that healing is not a race to be won but a process to be experienced.

Wholeness: A Timeless Concept

The concept of wholeness is deeply rooted in many ancient traditions and stands in stark contrast to the fragmented mentality often seen in modern Western culture. Historically, wholeness was understood as the harmonious integration of mind, body, and spirit. In Indigenous and Eastern traditions, healing was not just about alleviating symptoms but about restoring balance within the individual and their relationship with the environment, community, and cosmos.

For example, in Ayurvedic medicine, the goal is to align the doshas (energetic principles) to achieve a state of physical, emotional, and spiritual equilibrium. Similarly, Indigenous healing practices often incorporate rituals that honor ancestors, nature, and the interconnectedness of all life. Wholeness was seen as our natural state—a return to unity and completeness.

In contrast, the current Western mentality often compartmentalizes health and wellness. Physical health is managed by medical professionals, mental health by therapists, and spiritual health by religious or spiritual guides. This segmented approach can create a sense of disconnection, treating symptoms in isolation rather than addressing the root causes. Additionally, Western culture’s emphasis on productivity and achievement can lead to a “fix-it” mindset, where healing becomes another task on the to-do list rather than a journey toward integration and self-awareness.

Decolonizing Your Healing Practice

Our culture often glorifies productivity and achievement, even in personal growth. Decolonizing your healing practice means shifting away from these competitive, results-oriented mindsets. Here are a few tips:

  • Honor All Feelings
Allow yourself to experience the full spectrum of emotions without judgment. Each feeling has a purpose and contributes to your growth.
  • Prioritize Rest
Healing happens when we rest and allow energy to move naturally. Build rest and reflection into your routine.
  • Release Comparisons
Your healing journey is uniquely yours. Avoid comparing your progress to others or setting arbitrary timelines.
  • Adopt a Beginner’s Mind
Approach each practice or session with curiosity rather than expectation. Let go of the idea of a “good” or “bad” experience.
  • Embrace Receptivity
Healing is not something you “do” but something you allow. Cultivate openness to receive the shifts that want to unfold.

A New Year of Ease and Grace

As you embark on your healing journey this year, give yourself permission to slow down. Healing isn’t a competition; it’s a process of returning to wholeness. By embracing ease, grace, and receptivity, you can transform your practice into one of deep, lasting alchemy—where energy flows freely, and true healing unfolds in its own time.

Start Today: Take a moment right now to pause and reflect:

  • Am I slowing down to heal, or avoiding progress?
  • Am I speeding up to achieve, or responding to a genuine need for momentum?

Set aside five minutes to check in with yourself. See what might shift if you allowed yourself to honor exactly where you are and give yourself exactly what you need right now.

You deserve it.
