Have you been feeling less than happy lately? Have things got you down-in-the-dumps? When did your life get off track? What happened to your JOY?

We can slip into the doldrums so easily. It happens quickly. One moment, all is going well, and then we notice that the luster has disappeared. We have slipped into a place of just getting by. We have been hit by the BLAHS!

How did this happen?

I caught myself recently facing exactly this. It seemed like yesterday I was happy, having fun, and excited about my life. Then BAM! I simply wasn’t anymore. I couldn’t remember the last time I had fun—or even what was fun! I wasn’t UN-happy, but I wasn’t happy either. I was living in neutral. And I didn’t LIKE it!

I had moved into a place of lethargy, like my wheels were spinning and I wasn’t getting anywhere.

It was time to take stock of my life.
Where did I lose my joy? How could I get it back?

As I did a very deep personal inventory, I noticed a trend—ten things that I could identify as Joy Thieves.

Below are those thieves… and how to arrest them.

The 10 Joy Thievers and How to Arrest Them

  1. Comparison
Joy Message: Measuring my life against someone else’s creates dissatisfaction and distracts from my own blessings.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Practice gratitude spotting: name three things you admire in your life every time you’re tempted to compare.
    – Limit exposure to triggers (social media, certain people, certain environments).
    – Remind yourself: “My timeline is my own.”

  2. Overthinking
Joy Message: Constantly replaying scenarios, worrying about the future, or trying to predict outcomes drains emotional energy.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Use a worry timer: give yourself 10 minutes to think it out, then close the mental door.
    – Ask: “Is this a problem to solve or a feeling to feel?”
    – Practice grounding: breathing, journaling, or naming five things you see.
  1. Perfectionism
Joy Message: Trying to do everything flawlessly causes stress, delays progress, and often leads to disappointment.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Embrace the motto: “Good enough is good enough.”
    – Celebrate progress rather than perfection.
    – Set time limits so you don’t endlessly revise, tweak, or fix.

  1. Holding on to the Past
Joy Message: Unforgiveness, regret, or nostalgia creates mental stuckness and prevents me from enjoying the present.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Ask yourself: “Is this memory helping me grow or holding me hostage?”
    – Write a release statement: “I free myself from what I cannot change.”
    – Replace rumination with intention: focus on what you can influence today.

  1. Lack of Boundaries
Joy Message: Saying yes too often or letting others drain my time and energy leads to resentment and exhaustion.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Practice the pause: don’t say yes immediately. Ride your emotional wave.
    – Use simple scripts: “That doesn’t work for me” or “I’m unavailable, but thank you.”
    – Protect your peace like it’s a limited, priceless resource—because it is.

  1. Negative Self-Talk
Joy Message: The inner critic steals confidence and joy by focusing on flaws rather than strengths.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Name the critic to separate it from your identity (“Oh, that’s just the Inner Judge talking”).
    – Replace the thought with a truth-based affirmation.
    – Keep a “Proof File” of things you’ve accomplished or overcome.

  1. Seeking External Validation
Joy Message: Relying on others for approval makes self-worth unstable and fragile.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Ask yourself: “What do I think? What do I want?” before asking anyone else.
    – Practice doing small things without telling others, just for you.
    – Validate yourself daily: “I approve of myself.”

  1. Clutter — Physical or Mental
Joy Message: Messy environments and scattered responsibilities create overwhelm and tension.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Declutter in 10-minute bursts—micro-actions prevent overwhelm.
    – Clear one physical space and one mental space each week.
    – Use lists or systems to take tasks out of your head.

  1. Busyness Without Purpose
Joy Message: Constant activity without meaning leaves you feeling empty, not fulfilled.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Ask: “Is this busywork or purpose work?”
    – Schedule joy appointments—intentional time for things that energize you.
    – Create a simple weekly intention: “This week, I choose ___.”

  1. Fear of Change
Joy Message: Avoiding new experiences or staying in your comfort zone too long prevents growth and genuine happiness.

How to Arrest This Joy Thief
    – Take one small “courage step” daily or weekly.
    – Reframe change as expansion, not disruption.
    – Look back at all the times change worked in your favor—your track record is better than you think.

Reclaiming Joy Is A Choice

As soon as I saw these 10 Joy Thieves clearly, I realized something empowering:

If I can recognize them, I can disarm them. If I can name them, I can tame them.

Joy isn’t something that just “shows up.”
Joy is cultivated. Protected. Reclaimed. And every single one of these Joy Thieves can be arrested the moment you declare:

“My joy is mine. I am taking it back.”
