I tend to have a song playing in my mind as I go through the process of writing. In this case, “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman continued to come to mind. Feel free to play it in the background while you continue on this journey with me.
Mother’s Day is a time many set aside to honor the nurturing figures in their lives. For some, it’s a celebration of love and connection. But for others, it’s a poignant reminder of loss, absence, or unfulfilled longing. This special day can stir deep emotions, bringing grief to the surface in ways that feel overwhelming. Yet within this grief lies an opportunity for growth through the transformative power of Compassionate Awakening.
Compassionate Awakening can be described as the process of gently opening yourself to the raw emotions that accompany loss (i.e. anger, fear, sadness) while meeting those emotions with deep compassion and understanding rather than resistance or judgment.

This awakening is not about “fixing” the pain or rushing to move past it. Instead, it’s about creating space to feel and honor the depth of your experience. It’s a moment of profound self-awareness, where you begin to recognize the impact of your grief and allow yourself to process it without shame or guilt. Compassionate Awakening invites you to treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a dear friend, acknowledging that your pain is valid and that your journey through it is sacred.
At its core, Compassionate Awakening is about learning to hold yourself in love during your darkest moments. It is the first step in the Grief to Growth process because it lays the foundation for healing by encouraging you to soften into your emotions and embrace them as part of your human and spiritual experience. Through this awakening, you begin to see that your grief, while painful, holds the potential for transformation and growth. It is a practice of grace, patience, and self-compassion that allows you to begin the journey toward renewal.
The Energy of Grief
Grief is not merely an emotion; it is energy, raw and untamed, that moves through us. It demands to be felt, acknowledged, and honored. When we resist grief, we create stagnation in our energetic bodies, blocking the flow of healing and growth. But when we approach it with compassion, we open the door to Soul Alchemy, the process of transmuting pain into wisdom, sorrow into strength.
For me, this understanding became deeply personal after I lost my son and my grandmother within a five-month period. The weight of that grief was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It cracked me open, leaving me raw and vulnerable. But in that vulnerability, I found the seeds of a profound awakening. It was during this time that I began writing my book, Grief to Growth, as a way to process my pain and guide others through their own journeys. The framework I share in the book, starting with Compassionate Awakening as the pivotal first step, was born from my own experience of navigating grief and finding light on the other side.
The Mother Archetype
In metaphysical teachings, the Mother archetype represents nurturing, creation, and unconditional love. On Mother’s Day, we are called to reflect not only on the mothers in our lives but also on the Mother within us—the part of our spirit that holds divine feminine energy. This energy is the root of compassion, bringing unconditional love that we can extend to ourselves as we navigate grief.
Compassionate awakening asks us to embody the Mother archetype for ourselves. How can we nurture our own wounded hearts? How can we create sacred space for our healing? How can we love ourselves unconditionally, even when we feel broken? The answers to these questions bring the foundation for compassionate awareness, which then allows us into a journey to acceptance.

From Grief to Growth
Acceptance is the soil in which growth takes root. When we accept our grief, we acknowledge its presence as a natural part of our human experience. This is not resignation but rather a courageous act of surrender that opens us up to the lessons grief has to teach us.
Through acceptance, we begin to see grief not as an enemy but as a teacher. It reveals the depth of our love, the strength of our bonds, and the resilience of our spirit. It invites us to reconnect with ourselves and with the world around us. And most importantly, it reminds us of the cyclical nature of life: just as the seasons change, so too does our pain evolve into something new.
Practices for Compassionate Awakening
On this Mother’s Day, if you find yourself grappling with grief, consider these practices to guide your compassionate awakening:
- Sound Healing
Use tools like singing bowls, tuning forks, or drums to create vibrational harmony within your energy field. Sound has the power to soothe the soul and release stagnant emotions, allowing grief to flow freely. As I have mentioned during some of my sound baths, our mother’s heartbeat was our first sound healing session. - Journaling with Intention
Write a letter to your grief. Speak to it as if it were a friend, expressing your feelings openly and without judgment. Then, write a second letter to yourself, offering words of compassion and love. - Ritual of Release
Light a candle in honor of what you’ve lost. As the flame flickers, visualize your grief transforming into light, illuminating the path forward. Offer a prayer or affirmation for healing and growth. - Connecting with the Earth Mother
Spend time in nature, grounding yourself in the energy of the Earth. Feel the support of the soil beneath your feet and the nurturing embrace of the natural world. Let this connection remind you of the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
The Gift of Grief
Grief, though painful, is a sacred gift. It is a mirror that reflects the depth of our love and the capacity of our hearts to heal and grow. Through compassionate awakening, we honor this gift, transforming it into a source of strength and wisdom.
As I continue to reflect on my journey and hold space for my clients and loved ones, I am reminded of the resilience that lies within all of us. The losses I’ve endured have shaped me in ways I could never have imagined, inspiring my work and deepening my connection to the divine. The four steps I outline in Grief to Growth, including Compassionate Awakening as the essential first step, are a pathway to transmute pain into purpose. I hope they will empower you to find your light in the darkness.
As we hold space for ourselves and others this Mother’s Day, remember that we are never alone on this journey. The divine energy of the Mother surrounds us, offering comfort and guidance as we navigate the alchemy of grief. Together, we can transmute our pain into purpose, stepping into a new chapter of growth and alignment.
