Does America Really Love God?

One Nation Under God?

No country seems to proclaim its love for God more than America. From an early age, I recited the Pledge of Allegiance daily, learning that patriotism and devotion to God were often intertwined. Later in life, I’ve noticed how many conservatives appeared to express their love for God and the U.S. flag above all else, while making decisions that bring turmoil for so many in their communities. Indeed, history shows us that “loving God” does not seem to always equate to loving and respectful treatment of other humans.

In this article, I’ll explore the concept of “God” through the lens of Christian beliefs, as these are the predominant beliefs in America, according to Pew Research. This is not an attempt to proselytize, but a ripple I wish to send out into the world—a question that deserves reflection: what does it truly mean to love God?

Turning Away From God

As part of my Sunday sound baths in West Palm Beach, I invite participants to meditate on specific topics. Recently, after a session, a woman approached me and asked, “When did you turn away from God?” It’s a question I hear often, and my answer has remained consistent: I have never turned away from God. Instead, I have moved closer to what I call the Source—the Creator, the One that I feel is the origin of the universe.

Through divination and energy work, I connect with this Source, which transcends the limitations of dogma or religious rules. This Source is the energy that flows through all of us, through the earth, the sky, and even the celestial bodies. It is limitless and universal.

As humanity evolved, we sought ways to understand and express our connection to this limitless energy. However, when we tried to define it with human words and concepts, we unintentionally placed constraints on something boundless. Organized religions emerged, introducing rules about what was “good” or “bad” in an effort to shape and control how people interacted with this Source energy. Religious leaders, in turn, created systems to establish what was considered “Godly,” often dismissing practices that didn’t require the Church’s involvement. I understand the reasoning: if individuals found their own ways to connect with Source energy, they might no longer rely on religious leaders. And, without these leaders, who would take responsibility for maintaining accountability and ensuring the community’s happiness? While the original purpose of these systems may have been to support spiritual well-being, they also imposed limitations on an energy that was always meant to be limitless.

I believe the religious leaders were originally charged with ensuring the spiritual health of the community. This is not a critique of religious leaders or a call to remove them. Instead, it is a reflection on my belief, especially as an ordained Reverend: my role is to ensure that my community maintains a healthy connection to Source energy, regardless of the rules or religion they choose to follow. This connection is the essence of spiritual health and the root of “love” as used in this discussion.

When I hear people say they “love God,” I often wonder what they mean. Many of us were taught to keep commandments, follow the Bible, and love others. Yet, these actions can sometimes lead to contradictions. Scripture is frequently used to justify conflict, which in turn disconnects people from Source energy and from one another. It’s difficult to reconcile this with the idea of loving God.

Are We Creating Hell?

A conversation with a friend recently highlighted this even further. I shared that many religions seem less concerned about loving God and more about avoiding Hell. Growing up in a Southern Baptist tradition, I often heard warnings of Hell’s torment. But I believe loving God and avoiding Hell are two fundamentally different mindsets. The latter seems rooted in fear, which can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy of creating Hell in our lives and communities.

Consider the Universal Law of Attraction: like energy attracts like. Living in fear of Hell often perpetuates negativity and disconnection. Conversely, living in alignment with the love of God—valuing others, fostering creativity, and expanding our understanding—creates communities of harmony and growth. This reflects the Universal Law of Divine Oneness, where every thought and action connects us to one another and the cosmos.

The universe itself thrives on expansion. Yet, religions often impose contraction through rules and dogma. To me, this contradicts the essence of “loving God” and resembles an attempt to avoid Hell instead. True love for God, in my view, is about embracing boundless Source energy and living in alignment with its expansive, unifying flow.

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, I ask this question again: Does America truly love God, or has the collective focus on avoiding Hell inadvertently created a version of it here on Earth? Imagine the transformation that could unfold if, instead, we embraced a collective effort to love Source and one another. I firmly believe that we are all Divinely connected and that opening our hearts to Source energy can guide us toward a broader, more compassionate view of humanity—one where we grow together, creatively and abundantly, in harmony.
