For much of my life, I understood God as something external — a higher authority to appeal to, obey, or wait for. I learned that God existed somewhere outside of me: in institutions, doctrines, leaders, or moments of divine intervention. Spiritual growth, I believed, meant getting closer to that external source. I grew up in a Muslim/Catholic household, and even though neither of my parents was necessarily religious, I was still taught that God was an external power that had to be feared. Religious structures and their narratives never resonated with me, and truth be told, I never felt truly connected to God because that energy felt so elusive. I constantly felt like I was chasing something externally. I also never resonated with the narrative of fearing God…why would a loving and supportive God want us to fear him?

After experiencing a spontaneous spiritual awakening at the age of 21, that framework completely stopped working for me. I remember feeling so spiritually unsupported by this so-called God. Where was he when I needed him the most? I felt so abandoned as I was experiencing one of the most intense awakenings of my life. As I went through my dark night of the soul, I began to get in touch with the true spark of the creator. I stopped seeking the light externally and turned on the light within.
What eventually became clear to me is that finding God within is not a metaphor or a fluffy spiritual idea. It’s a fundamentally different way of understanding consciousness, responsibility, and connection. It reframes God not as a distant force that occasionally intervenes, but as an ever-present intelligence expressed through human awareness, intuition, and moral capacity. Finding God within means recognizing that the same force people describe as divine is already operating through us, without our having to do anything. At a basic level, this shows up as awareness. We don’t consciously control our heartbeat, our breath, or our ability to heal. There is a creative and powerful intelligence already at work. Looking inward made me realize that this intelligence is not separate from me; it’s expressed as me.
This perspective gave me a full new understanding of what true faith is. Instead of faith being belief in something unseen and external, faith becomes trust in inner knowing. It means taking intuition seriously and realizing that when I act in alignment with honesty, compassion, and integrity, there is a sense of coherence both internally and externally. When I don’t, there is friction. That feedback system is immediate and personal. For me, that is one of the clearest indicators of the divine operating within.
Finding God within also changes how responsibility works. Think about it: If God only exists outside of me, it’s easy to wait for rescue, forgiveness, or direction. When God is understood as internal, responsibility can’t be outsourced. My choices matter more. How I treat people matters more. My internal and emotional state becomes part of my spiritual practice, not something separate from it. Connecting to the spark of the creator helps us take back our power and connect to our sovereignty.

This does not mean believing I am God in an egoic sense. It means recognizing participation. A wave is not the ocean, but it is not separate from the ocean either. In the same way, human consciousness can be understood as an expression of something larger, without claiming any dominance or superiority. I also think it’s important to add that finding God within does not automatically eliminate struggle. Pain, doubt, grief, and confusion still exist in this dimension.
The difference is that these experiences are no longer interpreted as punishment or abandonment. They become information. They point toward areas that need attention, healing, or truth. This internalized understanding of God also reduces dependence on rigid belief systems. External teachings can still be useful, but they function as guides rather than authorities. No text, leader, or institution replaces lived experience. Discernment becomes essential. What resonates internally is explored; what contradicts inner truth is questioned. This creates a spirituality that is sovereign, adaptive, honest, and personal rather than fear-based, superficial, or performative.
Ultimately, finding God within is about integration. There is no separation between spiritual life and daily life. How I speak, how I listen, how I make decisions, how I respond under pressure—these actions are not separate from faith. Instead, they are an expression of faith. The divine is not accessed through escaping yourself, but through deeper presence with yourself. I feel a certain freedom, and I feel sovereign knowing that I no longer look for God to appear.
I’m no longer fearing God or reaching outside of myself to connect with the divine. I don’t outsource my power and wait to be rescued. Now, I pay attention to awareness, to alignment, and to the truth that already exists within me… I take intentional action rather than waiting for God to come and save me. In doing so, God becomes less of a concept and more of a lived reality: not some distant, elusive presence, not conditional, and not external, but continuously present through our conscious human experience.
TAKE ACTION: If this perspective resonates, explore how inner alignment shapes your outer reality. Work with Yasmin Elzomor to deepen your connection to the Creator within and embody a spirituality rooted in sovereignty, integrity, and lived awareness.
