There are some aromas that seem to bypass the intellect entirely, reaching instead into the folds of memory, the heart, the spirit. For me, frankincense is one of those scents.

Often called the “holy anointing oil,” frankincense has walked alongside humanity for thousands of years—wafting through temples, clinging to the robes of priests, and rising in sacred smoke during rituals and rites. It was once valued as highly as gold, not only for its healing and beautifying properties, but for its ability to uplift the spirit and anchor the soul.

Frankincense is grounding, yes—but also expansive. It supports visualization, helps deepen meditation, and gently slows the breath. I often describe it as the bridge between body and spirit. It’s a faithful ally when I’m seeking spiritual centering, especially during times of stress or emotional overwhelm. Just a drop—on the feet, on the temples, or diffused into a quiet space—can remind me to come back to the breath, to myself, to presence.

Aromatic therapy practitioners know that frankincense (Boswellia carteri) interacts with the limbic system—the brain’s emotional command center. Through inhalation or topical absorption, it may help regulate the nervous system, influencing everything from heart rate and blood pressure to immune response. And while modern science is just catching up, ancient cultures understood its value long ago. The Egyptians used it in rejuvenation masks; others burned it to cleanse illness, purify the body, and release stagnant energy.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to work with this sacred resin:

  • Midday refocus: Inhale a drop cupped in your palms after lunch to reset your spiritual compass.
  • Energy clearing: Rub into the soles of the feet when feeling nervous, scattered, or over-extended.
  • Concentration aid: A drop at the temples or the back of the neck can help bring clarity and presence.
  • Skincare ritual: Add a diluted drop into your favorite facial oil or balm to nourish dry or aging skin.

And of course—whether diffusing, anointing, or applying topically—always follow safe usage guidelines. Use therapeutic-grade oils, dilute as needed, and seek guidance if you’re pregnant or using oils with children.

Frankincense continues to be a constant in my spiritual toolkit. Not because it’s trendy or ancient or full of promise—but because it works. It reminds me that the sacred is never far away. Sometimes, it’s just a breath—and a drop—away.
