Challenging the Growth Myth

We hear “spiritual growth” all the time, but have you ever stopped to wonder—where are we even growing? What if your soul doesn’t need to grow at all? What if everything you’ve been taught about growth is wrong?

I started asking myself these questions during my decade of darkness. I was overwhelmed by heightened sensory awareness, powerful energy surges, and expanded states of consciousness—it left me isolated, stuck at home, unable to navigate an overstimulated world.

Lindsay Vatterott - Awakened MagazineA Dark Night of the Soul stripped away everything I thought was true. Anything I tried to pursue got squashed—taking control of my life wasn’t happening. Even stepping out of the front door felt impossible. Something so powerful had shown up, but I was too afraid to face it.

I wanted to grow out of it, beat it, conquer it, prove I could return to my old life—as if my ego deserved a trophy for the effort. Then it hit me: Could growth be the ego’s game? Is the ego chasing betterment, achievements, recognition, and glory, all while hiding behind the soul’s name?

That living hell pulled me into the depths, waking me up to my soul while my ego armed itself for an endless battle. It became clear my soul had nothing to do with my mind’s need for self-betterment—it was waiting for me to arrive.

Personal Growth vs. Spiritual Awakening

Life often feels like a never-ending school—we’re always learning lessons, chasing new things, and calling it growth. It’s like our mind’s way of saying, “Look, we’re improving!”

But is that what the soul needs? Are we really growing when we reach a goal, set a new one, and keep striving for the next peak? Or is that just the ego, obsessed with climbing mountains, hitting the top, then hunting for an even higher one? It never seems satisfied.

The mind loves to bait us, whispering that the more we achieve, the better we become—like the soul gets an upgrade, evolving with every win.

Spiritual awakening flips this on its head. It’s not about growing—it’s about breaking down the ego’s control and returning to spirit. It’s peeling away layers of illusions until you realize your soul, eternal and whole, is perfect all along. Waking up challenges the ego’s growth obsession and turns it upside down.

This is no easy feat. It took me years to finally surrender, to stop resisting my ability to feel the unseen world, and to accept that my soul was perfectly fine. It was my mind playing tricks, wishing my life were different, needing an award.

The Soul’s Wholeness—Revelation, Not Lessons

If the soul is pure and perfect, then growth isn’t needed—it’s already whole. Reframing growth as revelation turns the ego’s trap into a profound realization that feels true. When the ego insists we need more, the spirit quietly reminds us: just look within.

The external world is packed with distractions. We’ve been taught that doing things, enriching ourselves, and building an identity is somehow spiritual. But is it? Does improving my life in the world have anything to do with my real essence?

What if our spirituality is never harmed, never wavers, and is always there, waiting for our awareness? What if it’s that simple, yet the mind complicates it endlessly?

Unlearning the Ego’s Illusions to Meet Your Soul

If the soul patiently awaits our return, then unlearning the mind’s falsehoods is the way forward. When I finally stopped resisting my inevitable transformation and embraced the unraveling of my identity, everything changed.

I let go of the person I thought I needed to be and leaned into the undoing process. I trusted it was guiding me out of my mind’s fantasies, surrendered the inner battle, wrapped my arms around my challenges, and let spirit lead the way. That shift was everything—I felt lighter, happier, and curious about how to live with the energy that once consumed me.

It’s funny how the mind claims the “spiritual” title. The ego’s a clever trickster, always flooding us with illusions, working hard to make us believe our spirit needs to evolve, grow, and reach perfection.

But how can a perfect, pure, whole mirror of our home in God need anything? It’s the ego that’s striving, craving evolution, chasing self-betterment, all to keep you from seeing what’s already there—your soul.

Growing your identity and bettering your life can feel incredible—it might even help you live the life you’ve dreamed of. But waking up to your soul is about unlearning the ego’s system. The ego builds; awakening unfolds. So, why not let go of the growth myth, listen to the quiet whisper of spirit, and return Home to the perfection you’ve always been.
