Each of us is the product of our heritage. Our DNA carries not only the genetic material of our parents but also that of countless ancestors before them. Yet this inheritance goes beyond the physical—it includes unprocessed emotional wounds, passed down through generations.

The Bible speaks of “the sins of the fathers being passed to the sons unto the seventh generation.” Still, in truth, these patterns often stretch much further—across centuries, even before recorded history.

We are born with this energetic and emotional baggage. What we choose to do with it, however, is entirely up to us.

Contrary to what you may have been taught, you are not responsible for fixing other people. That is their responsibility. If someone asks for help, of course, offer it. But unsolicited help can lead to complications—it’s often unappreciated, resisted, or even met with anger or resentment, whether overt or subtle.

Many of us feel a deep loyalty to our ancestors. We want them to heal and evolve, and there’s nothing wrong with that, so long as we support them in doing their own work. We are not meant to carry their burdens or complete their lessons for them.

How does that happen, you might ask?

When we take responsibility for someone else’s life lessons, we become energetically entangled with them—and that’s not healthy. Just as we can become entangled in co-dependent relationships with partners or lovers, the same dynamic can also occur with our ancestors, both living and deceased.

It often begins with judgment. And if you recall, that’s against the rules. We’ve all heard the saying: “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” Yet we continue to judge—repeatedly. We are often the harshest with ourselves, but we can easily project those judgments onto others as well.

Any time you believe you know what’s best for someone else, you’re in judgment. And from there, it’s a slippery slope. When ancestral wounds are triggered within us—no matter the reason—the entanglement begins. We start running their emotional patterns, and the problems follow.

The truth is: every emotional wound must be healed where it was created. That means you can’t fix a mistake your grandmother made in 1910. No matter how hard you try, it won’t work—she must do the healing, often through forgiveness.

Now, that might sound impossible. But since time is an illusion, it’s actually quite simple.

You can ask to support your grandmother in doing the work needed to release the wound and dissolve the karmic bond. She can choose to forgive whoever or whatever hurt her, and in doing so, she frees herself from the emotional baggage. Your prayers and intentions are more powerful than you realize.

And consider the alternative: living out her wounds and dysfunctions in your own life. Compared to that, helping her release the past is far more peaceful and empowering.
