We live in an era saturated with information. It’s become an addiction—for all of us. If we don’t know the answer to something, we literally have the answer at the tips of our fingertips— any and all knowledge at our very beck and call. We have become a world culture obsessed with knowledge. We get some deep embedded satisfaction inside of us when we get the answer ‘right’, when we know something ’for sure’— it gives us a sense of control, like nothing is hidden. Knowledge is active; it is part of the yang cycle of the Tao. It is expansive, expressive, and part of the energetics of rationality, which all belong to masculine principles— principles that every single one of us here on earth contains, valuable principles. Yet over the past 10,000 years, there has been a steady drive towards the valuation of knowledge, and just as our world has been wholly imbalanced and yang excessive, so has our drive towards information, knowledge, and control. Yet knowledge is not the same thing as wisdom. And wisdom is where the mystery resides.

Some could say we are at a peak, and ultimately a turning point of change. As the title of this magazine suggests, we are going through an awakening. And if we are to be in tune with nature, that awakening comes through the recalibration of yin energetics. Some part of our being must recede as another grows— we allow for darkness, for the unknown to breathe. The dark parts of ourselves become illumined, expanding our entire consciousness.
To enhance yin energetics, there must be an authentic valuation of the shadow. As in the Tao, the feminine principles are made up of those things that are dark— the things we cannot fully see. The dark is just as important and just as valuable as the light—yet we have lived in a culture that has, in many ways, demonized it. We have seen the attributes of yin— those quiet, receptive, internal, integrative, gestational, emotional, intuitive, and energetic attributes as non-essentials. Not only not essential, but it is also not real. We have created a world culture that is afraid of the dark.
Yet the dark is where the mystery resides.
And mystery is what magic is made of— the thing that makes life worth living.
I saw an interview once with Jeff Bridges, the ‘Dude’ from The Big Lebowski. An interviewer asked him what the key to his successful 48-year marriage was—he answered in one word: “mystery.”
Mystery is the opposite of knowledge. Knowledge requires control. Mystery opens us to surrender. It leaves room for the ‘unknown’ and allows us to remain human—imperfect and wild. It gives us grace, allowing us to set our egos aside and merge with something greater —a greater force of intelligence that moves through every living thing in this universe. We as humans can create entire empires around ‘information’ and the illusion that we have all the knowledge in the world. Yet there are things that we will never, ever know, and it will remain that way forever. When we allow for mystery to exist in our lives, we begin to honor God. We allow ourselves to merge with infinite intelligence instead of remaining separate from it; we release our need to control our reality and realize there will always be unknown elements we are living alongside. We shift frequencies and realize that we are one part of something much greater than we could ever conceive on our own.

Humans have a great fear of the unknown. To harmonize with mystery requires that we become vulnerable and that we open to a certain level of humility. It means that we begin to honor the subtle energies of this earth, the living, breathing pulse of life itself. To engage with mystery in a meaningful way and allow us to glean wisdom from it requires that we begin to receive life itself. It requires that we open our feminine channels of receptivity and begin to allow for this wild pulse of the divine to touch our very souls. Mystery lives in metaphor; it is not clear, it’s muddy. It requires that we do deeper reflection, that we allow for our environment and nature itself to permeate our being. Mystery lives in symbolism, as it is not something that can ever be fully taken out of the dark. It requires that we play around with it, look into its darkness, and, by doing so, peer into our own. Mystery evokes our deepest yearnings and truth—it pulls at our deepest intuition, and evokes a certain wisdom. Mystery lives in the dark, and the dark, when honored, revered, and received, is what transforms our souls.
Magic and mystery are synonymous. They live in the same place. We, as a human family here on earth, are tired. We crave magic, we crave the aliveness of nature, we crave guidance. We are tired of handling it all on our own— we are exhausted by our own minds. As we collectively begin to choose to rest, pause, and reflect, we open the way for the mystery to begin to touch our souls. As we begin to surrender our knowledge in service of wisdom, we open our souls to receive that which is ineffable— a holy spirit, a wild unknown. The force of aliveness, the creative spark of life. That mystery which guides every movement, a pattern that will forever be unknowable to us. As we surrender our knowledge, we give way to wisdom— we bow to this force inside and outside of ourselves, a holy irrevocable force.
So many of us are pushed towards the edge of absolute exhaustion, and this exhaustion is forcing us to surrender. It’s a mass exodus of surrender and ego death— as the old ways have simply reached their end. So much death and sickness surround us— yet through that process, a new energy is emerging. The disenchantment has given rise to authentic enchantment. We’ve become so depleted that our guards are down, and we are finally in a place to receive. The realm of knowledge begins to give way to the realm of wisdom, and authentic magic becomes activated yet again. Magic is wild, and it lives inside the mystery.
