What is synchronicity, anyway? Have you ever had an experience like this: You buy a new car, and it’s red. As soon as you drive off the lot, you notice red cars—just like yours—everywhere. It seems like they’re suddenly all over the place. Is this just a coincidence, or is something deeper at play?

This is synchronicity at work. Coined by Carl Jung, synchronicities are “meaningful coincidences,” where outer events align with inner experiences in ways that cannot be explained by cause and effect. Jung defined synchronicity as “the coming together of inner and outer events in a way that cannot be explained by cause and effect and that is meaningful to the observer.” What makes these moments special isn’t that the external world has suddenly changed; it’s that you’re noticing things differently—your awareness has sharpened. This heightened perception is meaningful because it’s a sign of being more mindful of your surroundings and experiences.

You can actively engage with this concept by tracking synchronicities as they occur in your life. These moments aren’t just coincidences—they are often “Ah-ha!” moments for the soul. Think about times when you had déjà vu, experienced a sudden intuitive insight, or noticed patterns in your day-to-day life. These are examples of synchronicity in action. The more you recognize and reflect on these moments, the more you strengthen your intuition and expand your awareness.

Synchronicities happen more frequently than we realize. You might be thinking about an old friend, and moments later they call you. Or you receive a totem animal as a gift, and a day later, you encounter that very animal in an unexpected place. You could inhale the scent of geranium essential oil, which reminds you of your grandmother, and later that day, you find a letter she wrote you long ago. These meaningful coincidences invite us to pay attention and find deeper connections in life.

A synchronicity journal allows you to capture and reflect on these experiences, helping you “connect the dots” between seemingly unrelated events. One practice to support this is pulling a daily Oracle or Tarot card. When you draw a card, ask, “What do I need to know just for today?” Sometimes the card’s message is clearly relevant to your life; other times, it’s subtler. The key is to remain open to any connections that arise and note them in your journal.

When documenting synchronicities, write freely, without lifting your pen for a few minutes, letting your thoughts flow. Record any significant insights, sensations, and emotions. You can even carry a small notebook with you to jot down occurrences in the moment. Over time, as you track these meaningful coincidences, you’ll notice your intuition growing stronger, helping you align with your personal growth and spiritual path.

TAKE ACTION: Keeping a synchronicity journal is one tool of many referred to in the Essential Soul Care® protocol, a psychospiritual model for designing an expansive life. Check out the Essential Soul Care® Playbook, Oracle Deck, and online course.

The more you recognize and reflect on these moments of synchronicity, the more you strengthen your intuition and expand your awareness.
