Motherhood is often described as selfless, a role where we are expected to give endlessly, love unconditionally, and pour ourselves out until we are empty.
For a long time, I believed that.
I spent years shrinking myself, believing that my worth was tied to how well I could sacrifice for others—my husband, my children, my family, my community. I thought that if I was selfless enough, good enough, obedient enough, then maybe I would be worthy of love.
But what I didn’t realize was that by losing myself, I wasn’t truly giving my children what they needed most—a mother who was whole, free, and fully alive.

My transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took years of unlearning, healing, and reclaiming myself to understand that being a mother and grandmother is not about self-erasure—it’s about embodiment. About showing my children, and now my granddaughter, what it means to stand fully in your truth.
I’ve come to realize that motherhood is not just about shaping our children. It’s about allowing motherhood to shape us.
Breaking the Cycle: The Moment Everything Changed
I had spent years doing what was expected of me. I got married young, followed the path laid out for me, and built my life around the belief that a good mother sacrifices everything for her family.
And I did.
I sacrificed my voice. My boundaries. My dreams.
Until the day I sat in church and heard them encourage young women, ages 14-17—to start preparing now for marriage. To begin writing letters to boys serving missions.
To see wifehood and motherhood as the highest goal, as the only goal.
I looked at my daughter—bright, full of fire, unbroken—and something inside me snapped.
I cannot let this be her story.
That was the beginning. The moment I chose to break the cycle.
I slowly started pulling away from the messages that had kept me small. I started questioning everything. And as I did, I began to change—not just as a woman, but as a mother.
The Journey to Becoming a Different Kind of Mother
At first, my transformation was terrifying. I had spent my whole life following the rules, believing that to be loved, I had to please, submit, and conform.
So when I started using my voice, setting boundaries, and rediscovering who I truly was, I feared what it might do to my children. Would they see me differently? Would they think I was abandoning them?
But what I found was something I never expected—my children didn’t need me to be perfect. They needed me to be real.
I learned that:
- Being a good mother doesn’t mean losing yourself. It means showing your children what it looks like to honor who you truly are.
- Apologizing when we get it wrong is powerful. Healing doesn’t mean never making mistakes—it means modeling how to repair and grow.
- Boundaries are love. For years, I thought motherhood meant saying “yes” to everything, but in truth, it’s about teaching your children that their needs matter—and so do yours.
- Emotions are meant to be felt, not hidden. I stopped teaching my children to suppress their emotions and instead started showing them how to move through them.
I stopped trying to be the mother I was told to be and instead became the mother I was meant to be.

How Becoming a Grandmother Changed Everything
If breaking cycles for my daughter was the first step, my granddaughter’s birth was the moment it all solidified.
Holding her in my arms, I knew with absolute certainty:
- She will grow up knowing her worth.
- She will never be told to dim her light.
- She will never believe that she has to be small to be loved.
But I also knew something else—that wasn’t just going to happen.
If I wanted her to grow up knowing these things, I had to embody them fully.
And so, I committed to living my truth out loud:
- We howl at the full moon together, teaching her the power of nature and intuition.
- We talk to trees, showing her that the earth is alive and sacred.
- We chase butterflies and search for fairies in the forest, keeping her magic intact.
- We learn about pollinators, honoring the interconnectedness of all life.
- We have dance parties, moving our emotions through our bodies instead of suppressing them.
- We honor our feelings because all emotions deserve space.
She is learning, from the beginning, what took me a lifetime to reclaim—her wildness is not something to be tamed.
Motherhood, Remade: Whole Women Raise Whole Children
The truth is, motherhood is not about self-sacrifice. It is about wholeness.
For years, I thought being a “good mother” meant giving until there was nothing left. Now, I know that whole women raise whole children.
I am a different mother now than I was when my daughter was small.
I am a different grandmother from the women before me.
And because of that, my children and grandchildren are free in a way I never was.
This is what breaking cycles looks like.
This is what generational healing looks like.
And this is the kind of motherhood I was always meant for.
