Understanding What Holds You Back — and How to Move Forward
Last year, I worked at a retreat center, and like a new kid at a new school, I felt incredibly insecure when I first arrived. But after a few weeks, I became familiar with the retreat center, understood how each department operated, and gained clarity about the roles of the managers and staff members.

As a sensitive person, I know myself well enough to understand what and whom I can tolerate at different stages of life. Living in what felt like a summer camp environment, I quickly noticed that every staff member had their own way of living and interacting. Some people felt familiar to me, while others came from very different backgrounds, belief systems, and generations.
Even so, it was obvious that for the retreat center to function well, everyone needed to work together in harmony. As a sensitive psychic, I’ve often known things without fully understanding why I knew them. Yet as the newest member of the community, I didn’t feel I had the credibility to share my opinions about how things should be done.
Toward the end of the season, the staff held a meeting where everyone was encouraged to share feedback about their experience. At first, I didn’t want to attend, but several people encouraged me to come and offer my perspective.
As staff members took turns sharing their thoughts, I realized I belonged there just as much as everyone else. Listening to others speak openly and vulnerably helped me feel less insecure than I had before.
When it was my turn, I offered my honest opinion about how the facility could improve. The room went silent.
I said, “Instead of buying ice cream for the staff like little children, why don’t you renovate the bathrooms? That’s something we actually need.”
To be honest, whenever I’m given the opportunity to speak up about what I believe is important, I do—even when I feel scared or insecure. When you know in your heart what is needed, you have to trust yourself enough to say it. You have to feel secure in your own voice and trust that the truth will reach the people who need to hear it.
The surprising part of the story is that one of the bathrooms was eventually renovated because it truly needed attention. I didn’t know that would happen, but it reminded me that being secure in your actions takes courage. And courage begins with the willingness to trust yourself enough to take action that creates meaningful change.
Insecurity keeps you trapped in a fearful state where you no longer feel safe in your own skin.
When insecurity controls your life, it prevents you from discovering your true potential. It keeps you stuck, afraid to explore possibilities that could completely transform your future. Over time, that stagnation can affect not only your emotional well-being but your physical health as well.
Many people unknowingly build walls around themselves based on past experiences, disappointments, and limiting beliefs. These walls create a distorted view of reality, making it difficult to see opportunities clearly.
Imagine driving on a long road trip without ever cleaning your windshield. As dirt and debris accumulate, your vision becomes increasingly obscured. Insecurity works much the same way. The longer you allow fear and self-doubt to build up, the harder it becomes to see yourself and your path clearly.
Another way to view insecurity is through the shadow. Often, your shadow isn’t trying to harm you—it’s trying to reveal something important about yourself. Yet many people suppress what they don’t understand because the unknown feels uncomfortable.
Fear of judgment, fear of failure, and fear of uncertainty often create anxiety that exists mostly within our own minds. Sometimes those fears are reinforced by negative experiences or by people who doubt our abilities. The result is feeling isolated, stuck, and disconnected from the direction your soul is trying to guide you toward.
Boundaries and self-respect are essential for developing security within yourself. Without them, you allow situations and relationships to gradually erode your self-esteem. For empaths especially, understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy can be life-changing and can help transform insecurity into confidence.
Ways to Break Out of Insecurity
- Keep Yourself Busy Physically and Mentally
Movement helps break stagnation. Walking, yoga, strength training, or any form of exercise can help you build momentum and reconnect with your personal power. - Set Goals and Create Accountability
Clear goals give you direction, while accountability encourages you to take consistent action. Both can significantly strengthen your confidence and self-esteem. - Pay Attention to Your Environment
Surrounding yourself with positive influences and supportive environments helps reinforce healthier beliefs about yourself and your abilities. - Practice Appreciation and Gratitude
Gratitude helps relieve pressure and reminds you that it’s okay to be where you are right now, even as you’re working toward growth. - Be Patient
A sculptor creates a masterpiece by carefully removing what no longer belongs. Personal growth works the same way. Meaningful change takes time. - Be Realistic
Accepting your current circumstances honestly gives you clarity about where you are and helps you determine your next steps forward. - Nourish Your Body
What you eat affects your energy, emotions, and thought patterns. A healthy diet can have a powerful impact on how you feel about yourself and your life. - Understand Your Family Lineage and Karmic Patterns
Exploring your family history and recurring life patterns can offer valuable insight into your personal struggles and strengths. As you become aware of inherited beliefs and behaviors, you gain the opportunity to break unhealthy cycles and create a different path.
When you choose healing instead of repetition, you become a beacon for future generations. You begin to move through life with greater understanding, compassion, grace, and purpose.
