I stood frozen in the busy hallway by the library, caught between two worlds. Elaine’s hand gripped my arm, her voice insistent. “You need to come now. We need you. The club might fold. You could save it.”

My adrenaline started surging, and a familiar tightening gripped my stomach—a chakra-level warning. I used to push past that feeling. But not today.

“I’m sure you will figure it out,” I said gently, stepping away. “I’m going to keep my lunch commitment.”

That was it. Perhaps it seems like a casual comment, but that was the moment I chose myself.

A Lifetime of Being the Fixer

Being a fixer felt like a moral obligation for most of my life. I was raised to say yes and help whenever I could. As a nurse, I ran toward emergencies. It wasn’t just a reflex—it was rewarded, expected, and woven into my identity.

I said yes at work, yes at home, yes to the PTA, and yes to every request that hinted someone needed me. But underneath the yes was a deeper compulsion—to fix things, to rescue people, to smooth over discomfort before it even arrived. I thought that by solving problems and stepping in quickly, I was being responsible, even admirable. I didn’t ask too many questions. Why would I if I could help?

It got me into trouble. I remember the day my mother called in a panic to tell me that she had a brain tumor. I dropped everything—called off PTA meetings, arranged rides for my daughters, canceled work obligations. I cleared my calendar for what I thought would be a life-changing diagnosis.

When we arrived at the neurologist’s office, the truth emerged: she had diagnosed herself after looking at her x-rays, and she knew that I “would want to see the doctor right away.”

Relief hit me like a wave. Then came anger. Not at my mother, who was being her usual self—but at myself. I realized I had allowed a lifetime of overhelping urgency to run my life. I had made myself responsible for problems that weren’t mine to solve. That was the first crack in the armor.

Still, the pattern continued, even after that. When my marriage deteriorated, I tried to make the divorce easy for everyone else. I took on too much blame and over-responsibility and carried the emotional weight for both of us. Friends distanced themselves—because they believed I should have fixed the relationship, made it work, saved the marriage. The truth was, I had done that for too long. And when I couldn’t anymore, I felt like I had failed at being the fixer everyone expected me to be.

It nearly cost me my life. It wasn’t until I descended deep into depression that I finally turned inward to heal. That’s when I began listening differently.

When the Body Speaks

My body has always been my first messenger. A persistent ache in my gut—like the echo of a punch. A tightening across my chest. Headaches, and neck tension so deep that massage therapists were alarmed. Exhaustion that no nap could fix. These signs told me I was abandoning myself again—saying yes when my Soul wanted me to say no.

Sometimes, the dissonance was so intense I felt physically pulled in two directions. My stomach would clench so hard I doubled over. Still, I pushed through it. I told myself I had to. That people depended on me. That I could rest later. I thought being needed meant being worthy.

But I was wrong.

Worthiness isn’t earned through overgiving. It’s remembered through alignment.

The Day It Came Easier

That day in the clubhouse was different. Elaine was asking me to step into a leadership role. It was tempting. I could’ve made a difference; I knew I had the skills. But I didn’t want to. And this time, I listened.

I had left my full-time job to spend more time with my husband and finally pursue my dream of a writing career. I had promised myself I would be more intentional with my energy.

I felt my body split—one part leaning toward saving and people-pleasing, the other toward my Soul calling. I paused.

And then it came: the mantras that helped me change everything.

“The world is not mine to save. I choose my Soul’s guidance. I choose me.”

As I repeated them silently, a lightness filled me. I saw clearly: the people at the club would be fine. They’d find a solution. And maybe—just maybe—they’d grow stronger because I didn’t step in.

A voice inside me added gently, “Let them grow. Let them lead. You don’t need to hold this all.”

I was ok with it. I turned and walked away.

Into the restaurant. Into the presence of my tribe. Into my sovereignty.

Healing Thought Patterns: CRAFTING My Reality

It took me years to unlearn the guilt loop. The breaking point came after divorce and a deep depression forced me to examine my beliefs, energy patterns, and emotional habits.

That journey led me to a 7-step method that changed everything. I now call it CRAFTING My Reality – a soul-centered framework to release guilt, reclaim energy, and choose alignment.

  1. Check-In — Build Awareness
You can’t get to a goal unless you know your starting point. Develop a strong emotional vocabulary that genuinely describes your feelings. Notice how your body feels. Is there tightness in your chest? Do you feel your stomach drop? A drain of energy? That’s your Soul speaking. Don’t dismiss it—honor it.
Name your feelings, and pay attention to your body.
  1. Refocus — Choose Your Desired State
Decide how you want to feel. It really is a choice; think about being at work or in a social situation and how people around you are in different emotional states. Ask yourself: How do I want to feel instead? Maybe you can’t leap from guilt to joy, but you can move from overwhelmed to calm. Choose the next best feeling.
Just find a feeling that feels a little better. Then another, and another.
  1. Acknowledge — Acceptance
Acceptance is objectively naming the situation without judgment. You are not bad for feeling what you feel. Acceptance and non-judgment create space for change.
    Practice acceptance while remaining neutral.
  1. Face Your Truth — Own Your Role
What is the truth of who you want to be, and what you want to do? How can you honor your mission and purpose in life? Don’t abandon yourself by taking on someone else’s problems. This isn’t about blaming but taking responsibility for your role.
Ask: “What is truly mine to carry?”
  1. Take Action — Move with Alignment and Intention
From that place of truth, make a choice. It might be a boundary, a no, or a re-commitment to your well-being.
Aligned action is sacred. It says: I trust myself. I choose myself.
  1. Invite Possibilities — Stay Open to Creative Ideas
As you shift, notice what shows up. A conversation. A new idea. A moment of clarity. These are your Soul’s way of saying Yes. Keep going.
“Show me what I need to see,” I often say during meditation.
  1. Give Thanks — Anchor with Gratitude
Gratitude seals the shift. It signals to the Universe: More of this, please. Every night, I take a moment as I get into bed and give thanks for as much as I can think of, so I fall asleep steeped in gratitude.
Even now, I pause and whisper, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

A New Way of Being

Now, I rarely say yes on the spot. I pause. I take invitations into meditation. I ask:

Is this aligned with my Soul’s path?

Will this nourish me—or deplete me?

And I don’t apologize for needing time.

I’ve come to understand that saying no is not selfish. It is sacred. It is the boundary that protects your energy and honors your path.

I no longer feel guilty for choosing peace over performance, solitude over socializing, alignment over approval.

I don’t chase connections. I magnetize them through authenticity.

I don’t manage other people’s emotions. I trust they can hold their own experience.

And when guilt tries to creep back in, I remember:

“The world is not mine to save. I choose my Soul’s guidance. I choose me.”

Reflection

Where in your life are you still saying yes when your Soul whispers no? What would it look like to choose yourself—with love, not guilt?

Your Soul already knows. Listen.

You are worthy of a life aligned with your truth. You are allowed to choose peace. You are allowed to walk away.

I’ve learned this: honoring yourself doesn’t mean abandoning others—it means not abandoning yourself in the process. When we carry the weight of everyone else’s emotions, decisions, and disappointments, we lose touch with our own sacred center. Learning to stop fixing, overdoing, and people-pleasing was the most radical act of healing I’ve ever done.

You are allowed to craft your reality—one soul-honoring choice at a time.

TAKE ACTION: Making soul-honoring choices is just one of the transformational keys explored in Sonia’s upcoming book, The Seventh Gate—a novel about awakening, sovereignty, and the unseen forces that shape our reality. If this message resonates with you, we invite you to subscribe to The Soul Awakener on Substack to share stories, soul reflections, and practices for living in alignment.
