My inner peace has been hard won. After a lifetime of trauma and narcissistic abuse, I had PTSD, was exhausted and was going through the motions, literally hiding from life. I felt like an inadequate parent and provider, doubted myself at every turn, and just wanted to crawl into a hole and stay there. I felt alone and like I had nowhere to turn. It was MANY years later that I was able to reclaim my self-esteem and confidence after a very long healing journey. I didn’t have the tools or awareness at that time that would have sped my healing.

My inner peace is now the constant in my experience and is my non-negotiable state of Being. When I notice I am not at peace, I take immediate action to restore it.  I have finally found my joy and fulfillment and can sustain my equilibrium even amidst challenges.  Here is a sampling of what I have learned and some techniques for you to use to maintain your own inner peace amidst turmoil and upheaval.

  1. Notice when your mind is on overdrive, your gut is churning, your body is tense, your shoulders are up by your ears, and your breathing is shallow.
When we are just reacting to our environment, we become buffeted by the prevailing winds around us.  This disconnection from ourselves creates a feeling of being a victim of our circumstances. Your conscious awareness of your state of Being is the single most powerful way to maintain your equilibrium. When you notice you are overwhelmed, you can take actions to calm your body and make conscious adjustments to your mindset thus restoring your sense of personal sovereignty and peace.
  2. Get out of your head and do some “heart-breathing.”
Taking a few deep breaths is one of the most effective techniques to calm and regulate our nervous system and its stress response.  When you add placing your focus on your heart space as you deep breathe in and out, it additionally aligns your mind with your heart, bringing them into coherence. Science has shown that heart-mind coherence improves our physiology, increases inner balance, provides higher cognitive functioning, and improves interactions with others. HeartMath has sponsored extensive research on the subject of heart-mind coherence and offers bio-feedback devices that can make creating this coherence easier.

  3. Repattern your thoughts out of negativity and lack and into gratitude.
When we can re-train our brains to look for all the good in our lives, we begin to see and experience more blessings. There is a growing body of research that is now showing the relationship between positivity, greater resilience during challenges, and greater fulfillment in our lives. There are also proven health benefits due to the more positive environment in the body that triggers improved epigenetic states in our genetic dispositions. Making this shift into an enduring positive state is easier said than done – we are surrounded by negativity making it a deeply entrenched mindset pattern. To make the shift, I recommend using binaural beats and subliminal audios that you trust. The more that you do so, the easier it becomes. You can also cultivate an “attitude of gratitude” and relieve stress using a daily gratitude journaling practice.
  4. Get creative, use your imagination.
Our subconscious mind functions in images and stores the energy of our strong or persistent emotions. This part of our consciousness is programmed on autopilot and drives our behaviors and reactions until something disrupts the programming. It is where our limiting beliefs live. You know the ones – they tell you that you’re not worthy, you’re not deserving, you can’t do it, or that being seen and heard is dangerous. You can “re-program” your subconscious to release these patterns and install more empowering ones using -yup! – your imagination. Guided visualizations, neurolinguistic programming, and art therapy are powerful ways to dig into this rich tapestry of your buried history and completely recreate your mental “operating system” to operate from peace, joy, empowerment, and fulfillment.
