What ten days of absolute silence taught me about pain, impermanence, and true freedom.
In November, I sat in a ten‑day silent Vipassana retreat in Mexico.
Every day, I entered a meditation hall with around seventy other meditators. We sat together in complete silence — not just the absence of conversation, but a deep, unwavering stillness that held us for the entire ten days. Especially during the seated meditation sittings, there was nothing to distract or soothe. There was only me, my mind, my body, and the technique.
And I found it hard.

Well, my mind and my body found it hard.
There were moments I sat cross‑legged while intense pain surged through me. This wasn’t random discomfort. It was a build‑up of past reactions — every moment in my life where I had clung to pleasure, every time I had resisted or run from discomfort. All of it had been stored deep within the mind‑body system as energetic patterns, quietly shaping my reality.
Vipassana teaches equanimity and awareness. Whatever arises in the present moment is simply energy. And the law of nature tells us that everything in this three‑dimensional realm is impermanent. It arises, and it passes away. Always.
When we stop reacting to the rise and fall of energy, something extraordinary happens: the karmic wheel pauses.
When karma — cause and effect — stops even for a moment, we stop creating. And when we stop creating, all the old creations begin to surface. Old reactions bubble up, not to punish us, but to be released — to clear from our energy field so they no longer shape our present or future.
This process is deeply liberating.
And also deeply painful.
As the days went on, old patterns surfaced with precision. Pain spread from my left buttock down my left leg, an energetic imprint connected to my childhood. I stayed still. I stayed centred. I observed.
What revealed itself was the true nature of impermanence.
I saw how fear had once lived in my body — experienced as cold air entering my solar plexus. And then, naturally, the body responded. Excess air was balanced with fire and water. Cold transformed into heat and sweat.
As I remained aware and equanimous, I witnessed a great intelligence moving within me — energy reorganising itself, restoring balance without force or effort. The body knew exactly what to do once I stopped interfering.
That was one of the most profound realisations of the retreat.
This ten‑day Vipassana changed my life. I shed layers of old patterns, fears, beliefs, past‑life imprints, and ancestral energies. Layers I hadn’t even known I was carrying simply dissolved, and by sharing this experience with you, it can help you to shed layers, too.

A Simple, Life‑Changing Practice for you
- Become aware of yourself.
Become aware of your body and your mind. This begins with a choice — it truly is that simple. Set the intention to be more aware. - Notice sensation.
As awareness deepens, bring attention to what you feel inside your body. Sensations may appear as heat, coolness, pleasure, pain, tingling, pulsing, or vibration. Simply notice them. - Observe without reaction.
The more connected you become to your body, the quicker you’ll notice sensations forming. These arise from interactions with the outside world and from the mind itself. Our senses — seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and thinking — all create sensations within the body.
When a sensation arises, pleasant or unpleasant, remain conscious and aware. Choose not to react. Don’t run away. Don’t cling. Simply observe.
If you remain equanimous, you may begin to experience the same great intelligence at work — energy moving, balancing, dissolving. Everything is impermanent. When resistance and attachment fall away, patterns dissolve, and freedom naturally follows.
This practice is one of the most powerful paths to liberation I know.
For me, it’s not a technique — it’s a way of life. There is no destination. There is only one meeting at a time, exactly as it is. And in that presence lies true freedom from suffering.
May this support you in your life.
