Ascension is often spoken about as though it is somewhere we are going, a destination or higher dimension we will reach as the result of our efforts. But there is another way to understand ascension: an ever-evolving and rising state of consciousness while still being grounded in the reality of being human.
Embodied ascension is not about leaving the Earth or escaping the body; I say this often: it is about bringing greater consciousness into the life we are already living. It is about learning to hold greater awareness, compassion, love, and presence while remaining deeply rooted in our humanity.

Over many years of working with people through awakening and transformation, I have found it helpful to understand this process through five interconnected worlds. These are the Inner World, the Natural World, the Upper World, the Outer World, and the Unity World.
They are not levels that we pass through once and leave behind. They are more like a living map of consciousness. We move between them, return to them, and deepen our relationship with each one throughout our lives.
The Inner World
As with anything, we always need to start with the inner work. The Inner World is where we turn our attention inward and become willing to meet ourselves authentically. It is where we begin to notice the beliefs, patterns, emotional responses, and protective behaviors that have shaped our lives, including those we may have carried for many years without fully understanding them.
This is not always comfortable work. We all experience pain, disappointment, loss, trauma, and moments that leave an imprint on us. Over time, these experiences can create beliefs about who we are and what is possible for us that essentially limit us long-term. The Inner World invites us to meet those places with compassion rather than judgment.
Instead of trying to transcend difficult experiences, we learn to become present with them, listening to our bodies and recognizing signals. In this world, you will become more attuned to what limits you, what expands you, what nourishes you, and how you can take better care of yourself. We can soften old beliefs around fear, unworthiness, and limitation and create space for a different understanding of ourselves.
The Natural World
As we turn inward, we often discover a natural desire to reconnect outwardly with the Earth.
The Natural World reminds us that we are not separate from our environment. Our homes, the land around us, the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the natural rhythms that surround us all influence our experience of being human.
Spending time in nature can bring us back into the body, as we notice the ground beneath our feet, the temperature of the air, the sound of the birds, the cycles of the seasons. All of a sudden, our attention meets our environment as an equal.
This is an important part of embodied consciousness because spirituality does not exist separately from the physical world. It is expressed through the body and through the way we inhabit our lives.
The Earth does not rush from one season to another; trees do not apologize for losing their leaves, while rivers never question whether they should keep moving. Nature continually shows us that growth and rest, expansion and release, are all necessary parts of a healthy cycle. And in the Natural World, we start embodying these cycles in our own lives.
The Upper World
When we become more grounded in ourselves and more connected to the Earth, another dimension of awareness can begin to open.
The Upper World represents our relationship with intuition, higher guidance, spiritual awareness, and the universe’s greater intelligence. For some, it may be a relationship with Source or the Divine. For others, it may be experienced through meditation, dreams, synchronicities, higher self connection, or a sense of guidance that arrives.
The important part is not necessarily the language or terms we use; it is the relationship we develop with our own deeper knowing.
The Upper World invites us to become quieter and to listen for what arises beneath all of that noise. This is where spiritual discernment is important because not every thought is intuition and not every experience needs to be spiritually interpreted immediately.
This is one reason embodiment is so important. The more grounded we are in the body and connected to the Earth, the easier it can become to distinguish between fear, fantasy, emotional reaction, and genuine inner knowing.
The Upper World is not about escaping upwards. It is about allowing a deeper awareness to meet us here, in our human lives.
The Outer World
What happens within us eventually shapes how we live, our choices, the work we do, our family life, and communities. The Outer World is where our consciousness moves from something we experience internally into something embodied through our daily actions.
This is where we begin to ask different questions.
- How do I want to relate to the people around me?
- What kind of energy do I bring into my home?
- Does the way I work reflect what I value?
- Am I creating from fear or from authenticity?
- What happens when I allow my inner truth to influence the choices I make?
Embodied consciousness does not mean that we stop being human. We still become frustrated, have old reactions, or feel disconnected. But we are capable of noticing what is happening and choosing how we want to meet it.
The ordinary becomes part of the practice. The way we speak to our partner, raise our kids, interact with others, prepare meals, or care for our home all become expressions of our consciousness.
The Unity World
The Unity World brings the other four worlds into relationship.
It is not an ending or a destination. Instead, it represents a deepening awareness that the Inner, Natural, Upper and Outer Worlds have never truly been separate.
Our inner state influences how we experience the world. Our relationship with the Earth influences our bodies and consciousness. Our connection to higher guidance influences our choices. Our choices affect our relationships, communities, and environments. Everything continually feeds back into everything else.
This is the essence of Unity Consciousness.
It is the recognition that life is interconnected and that we participate in a much larger field than the individual self. For example, one shift within one person can influence a whole family. One conscious choice can create ripples that reach far beyond what we may ever see.
Daily practices can help anchor this awareness. Meditation, prayer, journaling, time in nature, self-reflection, conscious breathing, and simple moments of stillness can all become ways of returning to ourselves. The practice is not about achieving a permanent state of bliss. It is about developing the capacity to return to presence again and again.
Embodying the Journey
There can be a tendency within spiritual culture to place extraordinary experiences above ordinary ones. Awakening may be associated with ceremonies, sacred sites, mystical experiences, or profound energetic shifts. These experiences can certainly be meaningful, but they are not the only places where transformation occurs.
Some of the deepest moments of integration happen in very ordinary circumstances.
I have experienced this through motherhood, through tending my garden, walking through the forest, preparing food, spending time with my beautiful children, and returning again and again to the land of my roots. These experiences have taught me that the sacred does not need to be separated from everyday life.
This is what embodied ascension asks of us. Not to spend our lives reaching for another dimension, but to bring greater awareness into the dimension we are already living in.

There Is No Need To Force Ascension
The five worlds give us a way to notice where we are being invited to grow. Perhaps the Inner World is asking us to heal something we have avoided, while the Natural World is calling us back into a relationship with the earth. We will return to each of them throughout our lives, throughout the cycles of healing we all need to move through.
This is why ascension is not a race and not a destination. It is an ongoing process of becoming more conscious, more integrated, and more fully present. To create ritual and ceremony in everything that you do, from cooking to working, to taking a bath. It can all be a part of your daily ceremony.
The real invitation of ascension is not to become someone new, but to remember what we have always been, what has always been within us, and allow that remembrance to form our becoming.
The more deeply we embody the Five Worlds of Ascension, the more we discover that Heaven and Earth were never separate to begin with, and we were never separate from Nature, Source, our star families, and our ancestors.
TAKE ACTION: Today, give one ordinary moment your full attention. As you prepare a meal, notice the textures, colors, and scents, allowing yourself to be present with what your hands are doing. What changes when you give this familiar task a little more care?
