Everything in life moves through a sacred pause — a rite of passage into something new. In Fall, the season we are in now, the harvest withers and the earth prepares for winter’s rest. Before birth, there is a sacred pause in the nine months of gestation. In these quiet spaces of stillness and introspection, we come closest to the mysteries of life and living. It is in this stage of unknowing that I find myself wondering about the mystery behind becoming.

The mystery of becoming lives in the spaces between what was and what will be. It is that threshold where the familiar has already fallen away, but the new has not yet taken form. These moments often feel unsettling because we humans crave certainty and structure. We long to know what is coming next, to plan and prepare. Yet, life invites us again and again into the pause, into the unknown — asking us to surrender to a rhythm greater than our own.
What if the pause isn’t empty at all, but alive with possibility? Nature reminds us of this truth every autumn. The bare trees may look lifeless, but beneath the surface, roots are deepening, seeds are gestating, and new growth is quietly preparing to emerge. The same is true for us. The sacred in-between is not a void, but a womb — a dark and fertile space where we are being reshaped, even when we cannot see the evidence yet.
I have found myself in this liminal place many times. Most recently, when my sons left home for college, I was faced with the tender reality of an empty nest. Who was I now, when my daily identity as a mother shifted so profoundly? At the same time, I was entering the threshold of mature womanhood, navigating the changes of perimenopause, while also deepening my work as a spiritual teacher and guide. These transitions did not come with a roadmap. They came with mystery. And in the quiet discomfort of not knowing, I discovered a new invitation: to trust the unfolding path of my own becoming.
What I’ve come to realize is that mystery itself is sacred ground. It is not an obstacle to overcome but a teacher to sit with. In the same way, the seed must surrender to the darkness of the soil before it can break open and reach for the light; we, too, must surrender to the unseen rhythms shaping our lives. The pause, the unknowing, is not wasted time. It is holy preparation.
This trust does not come easily. There are days I want to rush through the process, to demand answers or clarity. Yet again and again, I am reminded that life unfolds in its own divine timing. When I soften my grip on control and lean into the mystery, I feel held by something larger than myself — by Spirit, by the cycles of nature, by the quiet intelligence of my own soul. In those moments, the unknown shifts from frightening to fertile, from chaotic to creative.
Living in relationship with mystery has shown me that I am never alone, even when I cannot see the way forward. Mystery is a companion — gentle, wise, and patient — walking beside me, whispering: Trust. Wait. Listen. This is the invitation of becoming: to honor the pause, to breathe into the space between, and to allow ourselves to be transformed.

So how do we begin to live in partnership with the unknown instead of resisting it? For me, it has been through small but powerful practices.
One way I’ve learned to honor the mystery is by choosing stillness. When uncertainty feels overwhelming, I turn to meditation or sit in silence. In the quiet, I remember that not every question needs an immediate answer. Sometimes the soul just needs space to breathe. Stillness becomes a way of saying yes to the pause, instead of fighting against it.
Another practice is paying attention to the language of mystery: symbols, synchronicities, and dreams. Life often speaks to us through signs we cannot logically explain — a repeating number, a meaningful song on the radio, a message pulled from a tarot card. These are reminders that the unseen world is alive and guiding us, even when the path ahead is unclear.
Ritual has also been a powerful way to embody trust. I’ve written down fears or old identities on slips of paper and burned them in fire ceremonies, releasing them to Spirit. I’ve walked in nature and gathered fallen leaves, letting them represent what I am ready to let go of. These simple acts remind me that surrender is not weakness but strength — a conscious choice to partner with the unknown.
Finally, I practice gratitude even for what I cannot yet see. Thanking the Universe, Spirit, or God for what is coming — before it arrives — creates a bridge of faith. It softens the edges of fear and invites hope into the space of waiting. Gratitude turns the mystery into a blessing, a reminder that something new is already on its way.
As I return to the image of the sacred pause, I see how it threads through every season of life. Just as autumn teaches us to let go and winter teaches us to rest, so too do our own lives invite us into rhythms of release and renewal. Each pause, each unknown, holds a hidden promise: that something new is quietly forming beneath the surface.
Mystery will always walk with us. It is woven into the fabric of life itself — the unseen currents that carry us forward, even when our eyes cannot yet perceive the destination. To live in relationship with mystery is to soften, to listen, and to trust the unfolding path of our becoming.
So when you find yourself in the in-between — no longer who you were, not yet who you are becoming — may you honor that sacred ground. May you breathe into the unknown, rest in its fertile silence, and allow life to shape you in ways beyond your imagination. Mystery is not here to frighten us. It is here to guide us home to ourselves.
TAKE ACTION: When you find yourself in the sacred pause, choose stillness over struggle. Begin with simple practices – meditation, journaling, or a small ritual of release – to honor the mystery as a teacher, not a threat. Trust that even in the unknown, life is preparing you for your next becoming. For deeper guidance and spiritual tools, connect with Uma Alexandra Beepat.
