The Hidden Cost of Fighting Reality

Have you ever noticed how exhausting it is to fight against what is? That tension you feel when life isn’t going “your way” – that’s resistance, and it’s more costly than you might think.

When we’re trapped internally in a tug-of-war between the polarities of life, we struggle. That struggle takes up a lot of our life force energy that could otherwise be used to power our dreams and a life we love.

Take a look inside and see if any of this feels familiar.

You’re running late and hit unexpected traffic. You can either grip the steering wheel, curse every red light, and arrive stressed and depleted. Or, accept the delay, use the time to listen to a podcast, and arrive calm.

Maybe there’s someone at work who always seems to push your buttons. You can spend mental energy all day anticipating their behavior, replaying conversations, and strategizing how to change them, or you can accept that this is who they are and focus your energy on your work and responses (as opposed to reactions).

Here is a big one! You’ve planned a beach day, and it’s pouring. You can spend hours checking weather apps, complaining, and feeling robbed of your “perfect” day – or you can pivot to indoor activities and maybe discover something unexpectedly wonderful about that cozy café you never would have visited.

Then there are the “real-life” examples that really make us feel powerless. Your once-independent parent is slowing down and needs more help with all the things. You can exhaust yourself fighting this natural progression, wishing they were still the person they used to be, or move yourself into acceptance and compassion, coming into cooperation with “what is.”

In each case, the “what is” remains the same, but the energy saved from not fighting it becomes available for actually living.

So, how do we do this? How do we move ourselves into acceptance? How can we come to the center point? The answer, my friends, is neutrality. Let me lay some framework.

The Thermometer of Consciousness

Imagine a thermometer where zero degrees represents pure neutrality – the exact point where water neither freezes nor boils, where there’s NO JUDGMENT of “hot” or “cold.” Remember, it just “is.”

To the right of zero, we have the “positive” temperatures, which we label as good, desirable, and comfortable—the sunny beach day at 75°F, for example, or the cozy fireplace at 70°F.

To the left of zero, we have OUR PERCEPTION of the “negative” temperatures – what we label as bad, undesirable, uncomfortable. The bitter winter morning at -10°F, the freezing rain at 25°F.

But here’s the profound insight: the thermometer doesn’t judge. It simply measures what is. The zero point reminds us that temperature is just energy in motion – neither inherently good nor bad until we assign meaning to it.

An Eskimo finds beauty and life in -20°F weather that would send a Californian running. A desert dweller thrives in 110°F heat that would overwhelm someone from Seattle.

The zero point represents that neutral space of pure awareness – before we categorize, before we resist, before we push toward one side or pull away from the other. It’s the still point from which we can observe the full spectrum of experience without being thrown off balance by our judgments.

Resting in that zero point serves a dual purpose: not only do we stop wasting energy on resistance and grasping, but we also enter the spacious equanimity required to rise to higher consciousness. This is what we’re all looking for!

Your Emotional Elevator: From Basement to Penthouse

This same principle applies to our emotional landscape. When you’re experiencing life through a lens of anger, fear, frustration, irritation, guilt, and shame, things don’t look so good. These difficult emotions color the world that we see. On the other side of the spectrum, imagine you’re in love. The world looks beautiful. You can see possibilities through the difficulties. Your mood is filled with joy, optimism, and delight.

The truth is this. Your true nature is love itself. When you align with your essence, you naturally experience joy and peace, not by forcing positive thoughts, but by simply being who you really are.

When we create resistance by refusing to cooperate with “what is” or when we make a judgment, decide something is “wrong,” this is exactly how we can suddenly find ourselves swimming around in lower-frequency emotions. When we are trapped in these lower emotions (also known as e-motion: energy in motion), consider it similar to living in a dark and confined basement when, just above you, there exists a beautiful, spacious, and light-filled view from the penthouse.

Think of your emotional spectrum as an elevator in the building of consciousness:

The basement levels house fear, shame, guilt, grief, and anger. At the 20th floor, we find courage – this is our turning point. The penthouse suites contain willingness, acceptance, joy, and love

But here’s the game-changing insight: Courage isn’t just another emotion – it’s the threshold where everything changes. It’s where we step out of victim consciousness (“life is happening to me”) and into authentic empowerment (“I am co-creating with life and it’s happening through me”). Courage is the emotion that moves us from powerlessness to authentic power, from reaction to response, from being at the mercy of circumstances to recognizing our ability to choose our perspective.

The Gateway That Changes Everything

The secret? There’s a gateway to these higher states of being, but it’s not where most people look. It’s not in trying to be positive or fighting the negative. The gateway is neutrality – that centered space of pure presence where you’re neither pushing nor pulling.

This neutral point is your power spot. It’s not caught up in the past or the future – it’s right here, right now. In THIS present moment!

Living from Your Power Spot

When we can literally reside in the centered space of the zero point:

  • Clarity naturally emerges
  • Multiple perspectives become visible
  • Attachment to being “right” dissolves
  • Your natural state of love reveals itself organically, and you don’t have to “do” anything to feel good or BE happy.

When you find this sweet spot of neutrality, something remarkable happens: you naturally rise up the spectrum of consciousness. And as you rise, positive consequences naturally flow into your life – not because you’re forcing them, but because you become the vibrational match to that.

Ready to step through this gateway? Here are three practical ways to find your zero point:

  1. The Pause Practice: When you notice resistance arising, take three deep breaths and ask yourself: “What if this situation is exactly as it needs to be right now?” This simple question can shift you from fighting to flowing.
  2. The Observer Stance: Step back mentally and watch your thoughts and emotions like clouds passing through the sky. You’re not the cloud – you’re the vast sky itself. From this perspective, you can witness without being consumed by it.
  3. The Cooperation Question: Instead of asking “How can I change this?” ask “What can I be learning from this?” This subtle shift enables you to move from resistance to a partnership with life. It moved you from victim to creator.

Start by noticing where you resist “what is”. Is it that neighbor’s dog, your sister’s attitude, your boss’s demeanor? That awareness alone begins the shift from resistance to presence, from struggle to flow, from confusion to clarity. Breathe through it. Relax your grip and then, within yourself, come into cooperation with “what is.” Release your attachment to “right” or “wrong,” knowing that every soul is receiving exactly what they need for their growth and learning. And, so are you.

The door to your highest self isn’t locked – it’s opened through the keyhole of neutrality.
