Grounding is the common practice of centering, settling your energy, and becoming more connected with Earth. It eases anxiety, quiets unruly thoughts, and brings us into the present moment.
The experts say breathing exercises will get you there. In my experience, the results rarely last—no matter how good the technique. That’s because connecting with our planet isn’t the only purpose of grounding. It’s just the first step to wholeness. When you reach wholeness, a calm, centered, and conscious way of being becomes second nature.

My First True Grounding Experience
In the late 1980s, I was given the task of interviewing thirty inner-world Guardians of healing gemstones—an effort to open the door for Gemstone Therapy as a viable form of energy medicine. It was during one of these interviews that I first understood what grounding actually feels like and how it leads to wholeness.
It happened during my interview with the Guardian of Jasper. My previous encounters had taken place out of body, often in heavenly landscapes. But Jasper’s energy called me to follow a path downhill, which led into a cavern. From there, I felt as though I were riding a slow elevator into the Earth. The air pressure changing, the weight of rock pressing in around me, tempted claustrophobia. When the movement stopped, I perceived a swirling cloud of energy in front of me, which was the body of the Guardian.
I knew I was meant to step into the vortex, and summoning courage, I stepped into it. Suddenly, I felt plugged into the Earth in a way I never had before. I felt as though I’d become the Earth itself and could know what was happening anywhere on or within the planet—I had only to put my attention there.
This was an odd sensation because the vast size of the planet didn’t matter. It had become my body—or vice versa. Yet there was something more going on.
It wasn’t until I reflected on the experience afterward that I understood what had really happened. I felt centered, present, and calm—exactly what you’d expect from being grounded. But I also felt something else: a sublime expansiveness. That contradiction is the secret of true groundedness. It isn’t only about connecting downward to the Earth. It’s about a heavenly connection, too.
Celestial Grounding
In nature, you cannot have a negative pole without a positive one. Chinese medicine teaches the same principle through yin and yang — both essential, neither complete without the other. Our connection to the Earth is only part of the picture. We also need a connection to Heaven.
I came to understand this more fully while studying Diamond Therapy, where two Diamonds can be applied together to create exactly this experience. Earth grounding helps you feel centered, calm, and connected. Celestial grounding helps you feel purposeful, motivated, and inspired. But neither is the ultimate goal.
Connect with both Earth and Heaven simultaneously, and you enter a state of wholeness — your negative and positive poles both engaged, your yin and yang both balanced and alive.
Four Kinds of Grounding
Through my work with Diamond Therapy, I’ve come to understand that grounding is not one experience but four.
Geologic grounding connects your body to the Earth’s body — the soil, the stone, the mineral kingdom. Celestial grounding connects you to your own divine beingness — your spiritual Self.
Geocentric grounding connects your core to the Earth’s core — a vertical alignment running through the center of your body to the center of the planet. Its celestial counterpart reaches upward: a thread connecting you to your divine origin, the heart of God, or the center of the Universe itself.
Geodetic grounding connects you to the four cardinal points—north, east, south, and west—anchoring you in the Earth’s horizontal plane. Its celestial counterpart works with the same principle on a grander scale—traditionally twelve points rather than four, though six or eight is a fine place to begin.
Geomagnetic grounding connects you with the Earth’s magnetic field, strengthening your own field’s capacity for energy and self-protection. Its celestial counterpart invites that same field to expand beyond its usual boundaries—toroidal, growing, encompassing more than your mind may feel comfortable imagining.
Earth grounding necessarily comes first.
Think of a lamp. Before you can turn on its light bulb, you have to insert its plug into the electrical socket in the wall. The two prongs in the plug are like your legs—both must be connected to the Earth before your spiritual light can turn on. Earth grounding is the foundation. Without it, the Heaven connection has nothing to build upon—and the circuit that creates spiritual wholeness remains incomplete.
The Earth-Heaven Connection
As I hinted earlier, Heaven grounding isn’t the ultimate either. There’s a third step to take, and it isn’t new.
Connecting Earth with Heaven, through the human body on a vertical axis, is one of the most universal concepts in human spiritual history. The Norse called it Yggdrasil, the World Tree, with its roots in the underworld and its branches in the highest heavens. The ancient Egyptians understood the djed pillar as the backbone of Osiris, a column of stability connecting the earthly with the divine. In yoga, the sushumna nadi runs along the spine from the root chakra to the crown—the channel through which awakened energy rises from Earth to Heaven.
Three separate traditions, describing in their own language the same fundamental experience: the body as a living conduit between what is below and what is above.
I wonder if the ancients were trying to describe a state that I like to call 4D grounding.
What is 4D Grounding?
Here’s what I have come to understand happens when earth and heaven grounding are held together at the same time, not alternating but a simultaneous experience
Consciousness lifts, expands, and encompasses.
When I glimpse this state, I feel myself carried beyond my ordinary limitations—beyond the edges of who I normally understand myself to be.
This is not easy to reach. The mind has a natural preference for one direction or the other. It wants to ground down, or it wants to ascend. Asking it to hold both an Earth and a heaven connection at once goes against its default tendency—and getting there requires something else besides effort. Because effort doesn’t seem to work. It requires stepping outside the limitations that the mind ordinarily operates within.
When that state is held rather than experienced in just a fleeting instant, I call it 4D grounding. Here’s why:
In physics, a fourth dimension is what allows past and future to be held at once, rather than experienced only as a sequence—first this, then that. I believe something similar is happening here. Earth and Heaven, ordinarily experienced as a sequence—first grounding down, then reaching up—become, in this state, simultaneous. Experienced together. Encompassed.
How to Experience 4D Grounding
To get there, you have to step outside the three-dimensional framework the mind defaults to and allow yourself to surrender to an exalted experience. I am not entirely sure yet what lies beyond it, because there’s always another step to take. But I know what it feels like to arrive: expansive, unlimited, and entirely whole.
That wholeness doesn’t include just your physical, emotional, memory, and mental existence but something far greater. It’s a realm where healing comes more easily, where any information you want is right there, and where your awareness can be anywhere your focus lands.
This, I believe, is the deepest purpose of grounding. Not simply to feel calm, or centered, or present—though it offers all of that too. But as a starting point. It’s the first step to discovering, even briefly, that you are not bound by the three dimensions you’ve been told are the only ones available to you.
Wholeness is not limited to three dimensions, and probably not four dimensions either.
A 4D Technique
To get there, first imagine lowering your attention down your body and into the Earth. Keep moving your attention downward until you feel anchored by its core. Then raise your attention up, through the center of your body, and out the top of your head. Continue lifting your attention upward until you feel you’ve risen above yourself.
Come back into your body and hold your attention in your core. From here, expand your attention by remembering what it felt like to be inside the Earth, while maintaining a memory of being above your body.
When you’re able to hold both at the same time, you’ve transcended the third dimension. Your consciousness has now surpassed physical limitations. You are whole—at one with the universe—and free.
We have always been more than three dimensions could contain. Grounding ourselves with Earth is simply a first step to remembering that.
