Understanding the Upcoming Eclipse Season: A Vedic Astrology Perspective

Eclipse season is fast approaching in September and October. While eclipses often have a reputation for being ominous in astrology, it’s worth understanding their deeper meanings before jumping to conclusions!

What is an Eclipse?

There are two types of eclipses: lunar and solar. A lunar eclipse occurs during a full Moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned, with the Earth positioned between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun’s rays from reaching the Moon. A solar eclipse happens during a new Moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, blocking the Sun’s light. Lunar eclipses are often associated with endings, while solar eclipses symbolize new beginnings. Eclipses generally occur in pairs, about two weeks apart.

The Mythology Behind Eclipses in Vedic Astrology

To understand eclipses in Vedic Astrology, it’s essential to know the mythological background from Indian scriptures. This mythology is the foundation of Vedic Astrology and offers a unique perspective on these celestial events.

According to the Vedic texts, a great battle erupted between the gods and demons over control of the universe. To resolve the conflict, Lord Vishnu, one of the primary deities, suggested retrieving a divine nectar from the ocean to grant immortality. The gods and demons agreed to churn the ocean together to obtain this nectar.

However, when the nectar emerged, a cunning demon disguised himself and slipped in among the Sun and the Moon to drink it. The  luminaries quickly noticed and alerted Lord Vishnu, who threw his discus, cutting the demon in half. Yet, the demon had already tasted the nectar and became immortal. The demon’s two halves became Rahu (the head) and Ketu (the tail), known in Vedic astrology as the “north” and “south” nodes of the Moon, respectively.

Rahu and Ketu are said to be enemies of the Sun and Moon because they were exposed by them. During an eclipse, Rahu and Ketu “take revenge” by blocking the light of these two luminaries. This mythological story explains why eclipses are often viewed as periods of challenge and transformation. The Sun represents the body whereas Moon represents the mind; hence, the nodes strongly affect the energies of these two parts of the body. This is one reason people get sick during eclipses. The Sun represents our energy and physical constitution, while the Moon represents our emotions. 

September 2024 Lunar Eclipse: What to Expect

The upcoming lunar eclipse will occur on September 17, 2024, in the sign of Pisces (note that Vedic Astrology often differs from Western Astrology in terms of signs and degrees). In Vedic Astrology, we slice and dice stuff to get to the real nitty gritty. We don’t just look at the planet, its degree or sign; we also have an added layer called, “nakshatras,” which are the lunar mansions of the sky. There are 27 nakshatras, with the Moon spending about a day in each nakshatra. These constellations have their own unique meaning that add color and complexity to what’s going on in the cosmos. 

This eclipse falls in the nakshatra called Purva Bhadrapada, symbolized by a man with two faces. At the surface level, this can indicate a duplicitous nature of someone around you or you may be showing a certain side of yourself, while hiding another. There is a saying that we all have three selves: (1) a public self (2) a private self and (3) a secret self. Purva Bhadrapada can often refer to two of these three sides. At a higher level, this is about the ability to see beyond the obvious material realm into the spiritual realm. It’s like having a foot in both worlds. 

This lunar eclipse aligns with Neptune, suggesting heightened opportunities for illusion or deception. With the Moon at 1 degree Pisces, it is considered weak and less powerful, intensifying these themes. On the other side, the Sun in Virgo aligns with Venus and Ketu. Venus at 29 degrees emphasizes endings, while the Sun’s conjunction with Ketu highlights themes of selflessness and the conscious release of the ego. Mars, positioned in Gemini at the midpoint of the eclipse, serves as a “trigger” for events. In the nakshatra of Ardra, symbolized by a teardrop, it may bring intense or challenging situations.

To sum it up, the lunar eclipse occurs along the Virgo-Pisces axis, with transiting Mars in Gemini positioned at the midpoint. Virgo, the natural sixth house of the zodiac, governs health and service, while Pisces, the natural twelfth house, relates to hidden matters. This alignment may trigger an event connected to health and healing, potentially causing an illness or impacting overall well-being, with the desire to release our ego and what we can control. 

But there’s a silver lining! Eclipses often create opportunities for transformation by removing what no longer serves us. Remember, it’s in the darkness that you see the stars.

October 2024 Solar Eclipse: What to Expect

The solar eclipse on October 2, 2024, occurs at 11:49 am, with the Moon and Sun conjunct at 15 degrees of Virgo in the nakshatra of Hasta. Hasta, symbolizing the hand, represents powerful manifestation and healing through our hands. This could be taken literally as healing through touch or interpreted more broadly as the power of healing through service, which helps us gain a sense of security. In either case, this solar eclipse emphasizes our sense of security, potentially transforming how we perceive it and how we achieve it.

Alongside the Sun and Moon, Mercury and the south node, Ketu, form a stellium of four planets in Virgo, creating an intense concentration of energy in this sign. Mercury is “exalted” in Virgo, where it feels most comfortable, but its energy is somewhat crowded, as it shares space with other planets. Planets tend to prefer having a sign to themselves, and when they “share” that space, their energies intermingle. Imagine being alone in a quiet room; as more people enter, the room feels crowded and overwhelming. Similarly, multiple planets in one sign can create a concentrated focal point, amplifying the focus on security and healing through our hands.

Interestingly, Mercury, the ruler of this eclipse, is positioned in Virgo with the Sun, Moon, and Ketu. As Mercury is exalted in Virgo, we find three planets aligned under Mercury’s influence in the constellation of Hasta. This alignment suggests that the broader message is to prioritize listening and understanding over speaking and that healing is not just through words but through attentive and empathetic actions.

Additionally, both Mars and Jupiter are aspecting this eclipse. Mars is positioned in the nakshatra of Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, while Jupiter is in the nakshatra of Mrigashira, ruled by Mars. Punarvasu, represented by a bow and quiver, symbolizes a return to light or a sense of homecoming, while Mrigashira, symbolized by a deer’s head, represents a quest or search. This mutual exchange of energy suggests that Jupiter will offer grace, inspiration, and hope through the disruptions triggered by Mars, likely challenging our sense of security and prompting us to search for healing and rebuild our foundations.

Eclipse Dos and Don’ts

• Do: Engage in meditation, eating clean,  and consider fasting. Eclipses can affect digestion and overall well-being because the Sun represents both internal and external fire, and when that is blocked, we do not digest our food as well. This is why it is suggested to limit cooked foods for the day. 
• Don’t: Avoid starting new ventures like marriages, jobs, or businesses, as eclipses signify blocked energy and are seen as inauspicious for new beginnings.This is primarily because new beginnings require light and during the eclipse, light from either the Sun or Moon is blocked. The Sun and Moon are considered the king and queen of the zodiac and two luminaries in the sky, so when we don’t have their support at the beginning of a venture, it can cloud the path.
