There are moments on the spiritual path when our inner guidance calls us to explore something we would rather avoid, especially when the subject challenges our beliefs, perceptions of others, or sense of identity.

Inner guidance often appears during moments of uncertainty, offering clarity in situations where logic or external advice falls short. For example, consider someone navigating a complex relationship who receives the inner guidance to give the other person space, even though it goes against their nature of wanting to fix or improve things immediately.

This kind of guidance challenges a profoundly ingrained value—like the instinct to repair or nurture—and instead asks for trust, allowing space for both people to grow. At first, this may feel counterintuitive. Our immediate reaction might be to call, reach out, or offer advice. However, by following the guidance to step back, the individual might find the space to reflect and heal, ultimately strengthening the relationship in a way that immediate action would never have.

For me, one of those moments came when my inner guidance said that to break through my current struggles and limitations, I needed to understand and explore narcissism. At first, I resisted. I don’t believe in rigid labels or diagnoses, and like many, I tend to shy away from subjects that seem to cast judgment or create divisions. The idea of labeling someone a narcissist felt damning, and I wanted to believe in people’s capacity for growth and transformation.

Yet, as I continued encountering the topic, I realized my resistance was an invitation. It wasn’t about reducing people to a diagnosis but about learning how to navigate specific behavioral patterns that were showing up in my life. My spiritual path wasn’t asking me to judge—it was asking me to develop new skills and strategies for dealing with dynamics hindering my growth.

1. Empowerment Through Awareness

Through my exploration of narcissism and narcissistic traits, I came to let go of the idea that everyone was like me. I realized that others operate under different paradigms, and not everyone is willing to take responsibility for their healing. By investing my energy in relationships that drained me, I was missing the opportunity to direct my efforts toward those who truly needed support—people ready to grow and transform.

This awareness was empowering. By facing something that initially felt uncomfortable, I gained a clearer understanding of the dynamics in my relationships, allowing me to make more conscious decisions about where to invest my energy. The true power of listening to inner guidance is that it shines a light on what’s hidden and gives us the tools to navigate it in a healthier, more empowered way.

Although narcissism is now a mainstream idea, I received this guidance way before it garnered widespread attention or mainstream popularity. At that time, far fewer resources were available than they are now. Getting this guidance early on prepared me to navigate its prevalence and impact on the collective successfully. It supported me in grounding and doing deep inner work, allowing me to be available as the collective shadow unfolded and others began to explore its impact. It was crucial both in my healing journey and as a healer for others.

2. Growth Through Discomfort

This experience also taught me that sometimes, something that initially feels negative or challenging can be profoundly beneficial. It’s like when someone realizes they are a workaholic.

The label itself is not meant to shame or diminish—it provides a meaningful container to reframe habits and patterns that aren’t serving. They can break destructive cycles and embrace life-affirming change by giving a name to their struggle. Similarly, my exploration of narcissistic behaviors gave me the clarity and tools to shift unhealthy dynamics in my life, allowing me to reclaim my energy and focus it in ways my inner guidance knew were better for me and those I could be serving in the world.

Inner guidance often leads us to places we don’t want to go but exactly where we need to be. When we resist, it’s worth asking: What am I afraid of? What might I gain by leaning into this discomfort?

As I struggled and resisted guidance, I stumbled upon a story about a man recounting his first vision quest experience. He idealized what his quest would look like—a profound, mystical experience filled with clarity and insight. Instead, he found himself chased into a junkyard by vicious dogs, trapped on the scalding hot rusty hood of a pile of automobile scraps. It was the middle of summer, unbearably hot, and exhausted and hungry, he vomited and passed out.

Yet, in this moment of complete discomfort and vulnerability, when he felt utterly helpless, the vision came. Spirit spoke to him, guiding him toward more profound wisdom. The lesson was clear: sometimes, our most profound insights and connections come when we lean into discomfort, challenge, and fear. His story mirrors the true nature of inner guidance—it’s often through trials and struggles that we find our way to greater spiritual understanding and personal evolution.

It was as if this story arrived at just the right time to help me surrender to my difficulties more easily. It helped me embrace my struggles as opportunities for growth and healing and more fully embrace my spiritual path.

3. Alignment with Purpose

In my case, working through my resistance helped me understand that learning about narcissistic behavior wasn’t about casting blame—it was about empowerment. It allowed me to recognize patterns that kept me in cycles of self-doubt and exhaustion, preventing me from confidently stepping into my purpose. By developing the awareness and tools to navigate these dynamics, I found greater alignment with my spiritual gifts and a more profound sense of personal integrity. By facing the pattern and learning new ways to relate to these dynamics, I opened up more freedom to explore and express my gifts with greater ease.

If you resist an intuitive nudge toward a challenging subject, consider that leaning into it may guide you toward something essential for your growth. Our inner wisdom doesn’t bring us to these topics to shame or burden us—it brings us there to heal, learn, and step more fully into our authentic selves.

Steps to Take Toward Exploring Resistance to Inner Guidance

If you find yourself resisting inner guidance, here are some steps you can take to explore that resistance and what it’s trying to say:

  • What messages from inner guidance are you resisting? It could be a relationship, a deep-seated fear, or an area of personal growth. Acknowledge the subject and sit with the discomfort without trying to change it.
  • Are you resisting critical awareness? Lean into it and see what arises. Resistance often means there’s something to learn. Consider what might be holding you back and explore what happens when you fully experience it.
  • Consider journaling your thoughts or taking small steps to explore what your inner guidance is revealing. Writing can help process emotions and clarify insights. Taking small, manageable actions allows you to ease into the guidance rather than forcing it.
  • Start your day by asking what actions you can take to help cultivate a more empowered relationship with inner guidance. By consciously setting an intention to be open to guidance and approach the challenge with a sense of empowerment, you create space for the lesson to unfold.
