Most people assume cognitive decline is inevitable. I used to think the same thing — until chronic pain forced me to find a better answer.

A few years ago, I was at the peak of a career that had taken me from helping shape the pharmaceutical advertising landscape to supporting the genesis of digital data strategy for some of the largest brands in the world. By conventional measures, things were going well. But privately, I was dealing with chronic migraines and severe nerve damage that made it increasingly difficult to function at the level I demanded of myself.
The conventional medical path offered heavy pharmaceuticals. I declined. Not out of stubbornness — I had spent years working alongside the pharmaceutical industry and understood exactly what those drugs do to cognition, energy, and performance. I needed to think clearly. I needed to work. And I needed to find a better way.
That search led me into alternative medicine, eventually becoming the founding CMO of a CBD start-up, to building one of the most recognized wellness brands in the country, and ultimately to where I am now: working at the intersection of quantum physics and human biology, asking a question that most people never think to ask.
What if cognitive decline isn’t aging — but depletion?
The Brain Energy Crisis Nobody Talks About
The human brain consumes roughly 20% of your body’s total energy despite accounting for only 2% of your body weight. It is, without question, the most metabolically expensive organ you have. And it is operating inside an environment that is working against it every single day.
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which impairs hippocampal function — the part of your brain most responsible for forming and retrieving memories. Poor sleep disrupts glymphatic clearance, the brain’s overnight waste removal system, allowing inflammatory proteins to accumulate. Processed food drives systemic inflammation that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Screen exposure at night suppresses melatonin, disrupting the deep sleep cycles your brain needs to consolidate learning and repair synaptic connections.

The biomarkers that track cognitive trajectory — IL-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), among them — are not static numbers locked in by your genetics. What “Biohacking” Gets Wrong
The biohacking conversation has exploded over the last decade, and a lot of it is genuinely useful. The reason is rarely the ingredient. The reason is bioavailability and molecular interaction. How a compound behaves at the cellular interface — how readily it crosses membranes, how effectively it interacts with target receptors, how stable it remains in your system — determines whether it performs as the research suggests it should.
This is the gap that most supplement formulations ignore. Ingredient selection gets all the attention. Molecular behavior gets almost none.
A Different Question Entirely

Movement is non-negotiable. A 30-minute walk raises BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor — which is essentially fertilizer for neurons. It improves cerebral blood flow, reduces cortisol, and supports the deep sleep that consolidates everything your brain absorbed during the day.
Nervous system regulation is where most high performers are leaving performance on the table. Five minutes of deliberate breathing before a high-stakes conversation changes the neurochemical environment you’re working from.
