As we traverse through life, there will always come a moment when we begin asking deeper questions of the universe and of ourselves.

Who am I beneath the roles I play?
What is my life truly asking of me?
Why do I sometimes feel so small when something inside me knows I was created for more?

Sheila Seppi - Awakened Magazine

These questions do not arise because something is wrong with us. They arise because the soul has begun knocking on the door of our awareness. They arise because the universe is inviting us to step through the door of change.

Authentic power is not something we acquire. It is something we remember.

Many people spend their whole lives searching for power in the outside world through achievement, titles, possessions, relationships, money, or the approval of others. While these experiences may bring moments of satisfaction, they can never satisfy the deepest longing of the heart. Why? Because authentic power has never lived outside of us. It has always resided quietly within, patiently waiting for us to recognize it.

Like the roots of an ancient tree hidden beneath the forest floor, our deepest strength often grows in places no one else can see. The Wisdom Tree, a metaphor I use in many of my teachings, reminds us that every mighty oak began as a tiny seed carrying the complete blueprint of its future within. It did not need to become an oak. It simply needed the courage to grow into what it already was.

And so do we.

The Difference Between Power and Authentic Power

The world often teaches us that power means control. Control over circumstances, people, or outcomes.

But authentic power is something entirely different. Authentic power is not domination. It is presence. It is not demanding respect. It naturally inspires it. It does not seek to convince others. It quietly embodies truth and, like the roots of the Wisdom Tree, runs deep.

Authentic power is the calm confidence that arises when our actions, words, and heart begin living in harmony with one another. It is the peaceful knowing that we no longer need to pretend to be someone we are not. There is incredible freedom in that.

Most of us learned very early in life that certain parts of ourselves seemed more acceptable than others.

Perhaps we learned to become the achiever, the caretaker, the peacemaker, the perfectionist. We lock inside ourselves the emotions we are afraid the world will see. We never cry, but we hide behind the tears with a little smile of encouragement for others. Then little by little, we collected masks designed to help us feel safe, loved, or accepted.

There is nothing wrong with these masks. They protected us when we needed protection. But eventually the soul whispers, “You no longer need to hide.”

Authentic power begins the moment we become willing to lay down the masks and simply be ourselves. Not the perfected version. Not what we think others expect us to be; not the spiritual or even successful version. But the real version of our true selves. That beautifully authentic human being beneath it all that was just waiting to be seen.

Ironically, the qualities we often hide are the very qualities that allow others to feel safe enough to be themselves because our honesty gives others permission to be honest. And our authenticity becomes medicine for our souls.

One of the problems with this, however, is that many people desire to be seen but fear shining too brightly. Not because they doubt their gifts, but because they fear what others may think if they fully express them. They fear being misunderstood or being judged. They fear disappointing people. These are deep human fears.

Yet every great transformation begins with a simple decision: “I will no longer abandon myself to gain acceptance.”

The tree does not apologize for growing tall. The river does not apologize for flowing. The sun does not ask permission to shine. The baby does not apologize for its giggles. Nature never questions its purpose. Perhaps we were never meant to either.

One of the greatest misconceptions about authentic power is that powerful people overshadow the power of others. They are boastful, needing to be seen, and to be loud. They feel they must take control of the room and consume everyone else for their own sake.

With true power, authentic power, the opposite is true. The most authentic people in the room usually speak less. They listen deeply. They choose their words carefully. They do not need to prove themselves because they are no longer trying to convince anyone of their worth. Their peace speaks louder than their voice, and their presence brings a quiet calm.

Have you ever met someone whose mere presence calmed your nervous system?

Someone who made you feel seen without trying? Someone whose kindness seemed effortless? That is authentic power. Not performance. Presence.

Five Ways to Step Into Your Authentic Power

Like every journey, returning to ourselves happens one small step at a time.

1. Tell Yourself the Truth

Power begins with honesty.

Ask yourself:

What am I pretending not to know?
Where am I shrinking to make others comfortable?
What part of myself longs to be expressed?
Truth has an incredible way of dissolving fear.
Even when the answers are uncomfortable, they are always liberating.

2. Honor Your Inner Voice

We live in a noisy world filled with opinions, advice, and endless information.

Yet wisdom rarely shouts.

It whispers.

Spend a few quiet moments each day simply listening.

Walk without your phone.

Sit beneath a tree.

Watch the sunrise.

Journal without editing yourself.

Your deepest guidance often arrives in the spaces between the noise.

3. Release the Need for Approval

One of the greatest thieves of authentic power is people-pleasing.

It quietly teaches us that our value depends upon making everyone else happy.

But no matter how hard we try, someone will misunderstand us.

Someone will disagree.
Someone may even reject us.

And that is okay.

Your purpose is not to be accepted by everyone.

Your purpose is to become fully yourself.

The people meant for your journey will recognize your heart.

4. Live From Your Values

Authentic power grows every time our actions align with what we believe.

Integrity is not perfection.

It is consistent.

Ask yourself:

Does this decision reflect who I truly am?
Does this conversation reflect kindness?
Does this choice create more peace?

Small daily decisions build extraordinary lives.

5. Remember Who You Already Are

Perhaps the greatest spiritual practice is remembrance.

Not becoming.

Remembering.
Remembering your goodness.
Remembering your resilience.
Remembering your compassion.
Remembering your wisdom.
Remembering that beneath every disappointment, every mistake, every heartbreak, there remains an unchanging spark that has never been broken.

Life may have covered it with fear.

But it has never extinguished it.

The Wisdom of the Tree

If the Wisdom Tree could speak today, perhaps it would say this: “Do not measure yourself by your seasons.”

The seasons do not measure themselves. Winter does not mean the tree has failed. It simply means it is gathering strength beneath the surface. Your quiet seasons matter! Your healing seasons matter! Your uncertain seasons matter! You matter!

Growth is often invisible before it becomes obvious. Trust the unseen work happening within you. Roots always grow before branches.

So today, choose one small act of authenticity. Speak one honest sentence. Set one healthy boundary. Forgive yourself for one old mistake. Celebrate one strength you’ve overlooked. Trust one quiet intuition. Take one small step toward the life your heart has been gently calling you toward.

Authentic power is rarely found in dramatic moments. It is found in ordinary choices made with extraordinary honesty. As you begin living from that place, something beautiful happens. You stop asking, “Am I enough?” And instead begin asking, “How can I lovingly express who I truly am today?” That single shift changes everything.

The Wisdom Tree has watched countless generations pass beneath its branches. It has witnessed victories and losses, beginnings and endings, seasons of abundance and seasons of waiting.

Imagine that a cool breeze is blowing the leaves of the tree as it whispers a simple reminder to you:  You were never created to become someone else. You were created to become fully yourself. Stand deeply rooted. Reach courageously toward the light. Trust the life growing within you. For the strength you seek has been quietly waiting in your own heart all along.
